Bold colors and lush florals have always been a big part of Trina Turk s oeuvre, so it came as no surprise that she ignored this season s 70s love affair in favor of prints inspired by Paul Gauguin s Tahiti paintings. In splashy shades of poppy, jade, and plum, the collection s key pattern, "autumn leaves," would feel downright summery to the uninitiated. But Turk made a case for "transitioning" it into Fall after beginning to wear it in the middle of summer. It s hard to picture a New Yorker wearing a tropical print past August, but Turk s customers—many of them on the West Coast—never tire of those verdant florals and tan-enhancing hues. The "Day-Glo lace" pieces will no doubt do well in sunny L.A., particularly the citron pencil skirt and orchid cape-back dress. Turk proposed styling them with chunky knits and black tights in colder climates, but the winter neon trend feels a bit dated now. That being said, there were some standout pieces, like black gauchos, a sporty knit halter, and pool-ready caftans. In the end, Turk said it best: "It doesn t even get cold in L.A. until November, so it s more like an Indian summer for us." Perhaps it s a concept too foreign for East Coasters to truly grasp.
