Givenchy

RESORT 2009

By Riccardo Tisci

Riccardo Tisci is a designer who likes to get mileage out of a theme once he s found it. So far, he s used a trip to South America to fuel his Fall ready-to-wear and haute couture shows, and he s not stopping for Resort. No matter, though, because it s here that the filtering of Latin American Catholicism and gaucho influence makes the most sense as elements of an urban wardrobe.

Tisci s skill in developing Givenchy as a go-to blouse house was stamped all over Resort in different ways: undulating plissé frills falling into asymmetric jabots, a crisp linen jacquard lace, shirtdresses, and (a trend to watch) a lot of new scarf action at the neck—either wound integrally into striped and bandanna-print shirts, or as silk squares, knotted Girl Scout-style. Accessory-wise, there was a choice of fully embracing the South American Way—gold cowboy boots, gaucho riding-chap boots—or not. A great fold-over tobacco lizard clutch was charged with the kind of unidentifiable, no-logo chic that is quietly gathering more and more followers to the cult of Givenchy.
