Just how many LaPointe sets walk through the streets of SoHo on a night out? It’s probably too many to count, as the feather-lined and sequined ensembles are a staple in many party-loving downtown New Yorkers’ closets. But today the world got to catch a glimpse of a LaPointe girl out during the day when Sally LaPointe took over Crosby Street for her first show since the beginning of the pandemic. The choice of location, right across from her showroom, made it even more meaningful for the designer to have her first presentation in years. “I just kept thinking about creative destruction and letting go, like the way we used to do things,” she said. “I’m really honing in on what’s true to my brand and doing it in a way I feel comfortable.”

The idea for the spring collection came together at a bodega. LaPointe was out buying a lottery ticket when the Mega Millions was at its all-time high, and she began fantasizing about what she would wear if she won. While other potential winners might opt for an anonymous, privacy-enhancing look, it would be the opposite for LaPointe. A lot of lime green, similar to the color of money, lemon yellow, and metallics would instead make up the color palette of her fantasy wardrobe. It would also include see-through glitter gowns that could almost blind you when set against a bright light, and floor-length patent trenches that say “Look at me.”

During the day, LaPointe’s clothing might appear slightly eccentric to the average person—she had crowds of pedestrians gathered around the outdoor show, causing a traffic jam. Those people also got a sense of how her collection would look after dark as the sky became gloomy and moody just as the show had finally begun, setting the perfect backdrop.
