Matthieu Blazy’s Chanel Debut is Finally Here—Follow Along With Vogue Editors
The most eventful season in recent fashion history comes to an end today, when Matthieu Blazy shows his first-ever collection as the new creative director at Chanel. In June of last year, Virginie Viard, who had worked as Karl Lagerfeld’s right-hand woman for 25 years before becoming creative director after his passing, would be stepping down. Her departure set off a frenzied six months of gossip and speculation about just who would be named her successor, and take on one of the most important jobs in fashion. In December we learned it would be Blazy, who in a few short seasons had turned Bottega Veneta into one of the most influential brands. Now, almost 10 months later, we finally get to see what he has in store for Chanel. Join us as we unpack the new collection.
Chanel steps into the future — “Rhythm Is a Dancer” sets the tone. The tips of the shoes turn (even square), and the embroidery recalls Mademoiselle Chanel’s apartment. Midi skirts are paired with oversized shirts and jackets with turned-up cuffs. The bag is left open, overflowing with life. The camellia is no longer alone but joined by giant flowers, like brooches and on skirts. Matthieu knows that here, dreaming happens in only one way: on a grand scale. And the tshirt for the night, that’s a must of the season!
