Fall's footwear got a seriously plush upgrade in the form of velvet fabrications. The collections were full of compelling reasons to put your oversize bag back on the shelf for a while. Case in point: the clutch's cool new daytime iteration, sans sequins and sans frills. Designers were feeling Lucite in a major way, as evidenced by its cameos on runways from Dolce & Gabbana to Dior. The flip side to the season's ornate accessories comes in the form of substantial, sculptural jewelry that's low on fripperies and high on impact. Fall's bevy of thigh-high boots is certain to strike fear in the hearts of the more sartorially timid, but never fear. Up-to-there pairs like those seen at Dior and Altuzarra are worthy bets to make for next season's wardrobe. The latest avatar of all that fringe we've been seeing lately? Tassels, and lots of them. Alber Elbaz whipped this accent into earrings and necklaces at Lanvin, but the countless bags (and more than a few kicks) that bore them elsewhere weren't too shabby, either. Patent is making its big, glossy comeback. The high-shine footwear seen everywhere from Dior to Rodarte served as a vivid reminder to stock up on shoe polish now. Fall's reigning hue? Without a doubt, red and every variation therein. From lipstick red to tomato red to blood red, there was no shortage of this attention-getting shade. With labels from Marc Jacobs to Louis Vuitton riffing on the classic Mary Jane, this once-mom-approved style is anything but retro.
