As the cloud of hairspray settled, next came outfit selection, which proved to be the most fascinating element of the show for me and my fellow voyeurs, as it gave us a glimpse into the seemingly endless personal wardrobes of these runway fixtures. Irina Shayk, in her plush Versace robe, thumbed through rows of hangers to find her favorite leopard dress and cape. Natasha Poly, the show opener, opted for a shimmering minidress covered in silver paillettes, and for Shanina Shaik, a Marine Serre catsuit.

Much like the looks—a smattering of athletics, casualwear, and recycled evening gowns from galas gone by—the mise-en-scènes for the show were varied too. Garrett Neff strutted down the dock of his family’s New Hampshire lake house joined by his rescued cocker spaniel, Millie, with Isabeli Fontana and Jasmine Sanders later following suit with their canine pals—as well as one white cockatoo. Catwalk legends Carolyn Murphy, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Eva Herzigova proved they were, indeed, the experts, as they moved to the Michel Gaubert–assembled soundtrack. “I think Carolyn Murphy just sold me on wearing jeans again,” one fellow sweatpant-addicted quarantiner joked in a text to me as we watched Murphy skillfully pose in her hallway for the crowd of more than 200,000 viewers.

But it was Karolina Kurkova’s minty green, psychedelic pantsuit that transported me, as I thought, Where would I wear that right now? I began to dream of reemergence, of that sunny esplanade in Antibes. But I found comfort in the fact that something so fabulous—a runway show filled to the brim with influential figures raising funds to find a vaccine for COVID-19—was orchestrated safely from our homes. Imagine what sort of fabulous change we might be able to affect once we do reemerge.
