The Details Behind Anya Taylor-Joy’s Dramatic Beauty Look for the Oscars After-Party

Is there such a thing as lingerie-inspired beauty? In 2022, at the Oscars and beyond, it seems that Dior’s muses are making it so. Earlier this month, Last Night in Soho star Anya Taylor-Joy sat front row at the house’s Paris show, not far from Rihanna’s now-infamous transparent babydoll dress, moody lids and garnet lips. Wrapped in a Dior bathrobe ahead of Vanity Fair’s Oscars party on Sunday, Taylor-Joy channeled a similar beauty attitude. “I love a red lip,” the actor tells Vogue of Dior’s signature 999 shade, which makeup artist Georgie Eisdell applied for the evening along with a sooty bedroom eye.
“It looks almost slept-in with the smudged liner,” the actor tells Vogue of the smoked-out gaze Eisdell created with layers of Mono Couleur Couture Shadow in the shade Black Bow, perhaps a nod to the sheer layers of Taylor-Joy’s LBD for the evening. (Designed by Maria Grazia Churia, stylist Ryan Hastings pulled the pleated bustier gown straight from the runway.) Manicurist Kim Truong’s nail designs were lacy, too, with inky frills painted in the shape of a French manicure on an almond base. “They were the perfect finishing touch from a true artist,” says Taylor-Joy.
For a Hollywood-inspired updo that lent itself to The Queen s Gambit star’s birdcage veil, her longtime hairstylist Gregory Russell pinned her platinum lengths into a slick chignon. “Clean, chic and modern,” is how Taylor-Joy describes the look that she and Russell hoped would create a balance with the makeup, which Eisdell noted “needed a toughness to it.” Once Taylor-Joy made a red carpet appearance with boyfriend Malcolm McRae at the party toasting the night’s nominees, she reported back with good news of the glam: “It looked even better as the night went on!”
