Here’s Your First Look at Sarah Paulson, Elle Fanning, and Corey Stoll in Appropriate

Before Appropriate—the 2013 play by Pulitzer Prize finalist Branden Jacobs-Jenkins—officially opens at Broadway’s Hayes Theater this evening, we have your first look at the buzzy new production, directed by Lila Neugebauer (The Waverly Gallery).
Set shortly after the death of the Lafayette family’s patriarch, Appropriate follows eldest daughter Toni (Sarah Paulson); her brothers Bo (Corey Stoll) and Franz (Michael Esper); and their various partners and children (including River, Franz’s fiancée, played by Elle Fanning) as they sort through his crowded old plantation house in Arkansas. But as tensions begin to rise and strange objects are uncovered in the attic, “long-hidden secrets and buried resentments can’t be contained, and the family is forced to face the ghosts of their past,” as the show’s synopsis reads. (Appropriate made its New York debut at the off-Broadway Pershing Square Signature Center in 2014, winning the Obie Award for Best New American Play.)
Its run at the Hayes marks Paulson’s first Broadway turn since 2010—when she starred opposite Linda Lavin in Donald Margulies’s Collected Stories—and her first stage role in a decade. (Her last was in another two-hander, Lanford Wilson’s Talley’s Folly, at the Roundabout Theatre Company with Danny Burstein in 2013.) “You know how they say your cells all turn over every 10 years? I’m a whole new person since I last did a play,” Paulson recently told Vogue. “I’m interested to meet who I’ll be.”
Added Fanning, who makes her Broadway debut with Appropriate, “I have never done a play before, so knowing I would have Branden, Lila, and Sarah to lean on during my first production was a huge gift.”
