It’s official—the second new moon after the winter solstice means that Chinese New Year has arrived. Over-the-top fireworks, dumpling feasts, and red envelopes filled with cash that revelers traditionally give and receive are enough to make us want to join the party, but the custom for wearing jade is an added incentive. Chinese lore suggests that wearing the green gemstone, considered an amulet against bad luck, will bring an auspicious start to the calendar cycle, bolstering it with good fortune and protection.
