California Cowgirls by Liza Kanaeva-Hunsicker
The photographer captured the fierceness of the Fillies, a Californian cowgirl riding group bonded together by their love for each other and their horses.

“I met the Fillies, an all female cowgirl riding group from California, through my mother-in-law. They’re based in the Santa Ynez Valley, nested between two mountain ranges, she’s a land of rolling hills, burnt grass, and mighty and mystical oak trees covered in hanging moss. A land hiding a bastion of authentic cowboy culture that is alive and traditional, but modern nonetheless. When I first met the Fillies I was taken by the fashion (the champs alone) and a tougher side of womanhood that seemed to be second nature to the cowgirls. But as I dug deeper I discovered a formidable spirit of camaraderie and respect among women and between themselves and their animals. I wanted to document this community because it speaks to aging gracefully, female friendship, and a bond between human and animal based on a true respect, honoring our land and cultural heritage. And the fashion.”
