As the matriarch of the Crawley clan, the Dowager Countess is unrelenting in her beliefs on tradition and moral order. Therefore, what better way to modernize decorum than a Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen fanciful yet modest dress?

We know that she faced an untimely end in season three, but Sybil s style (and life!) choices—a pantsuit in shades of teal, a nursing career during World War I, and an elopement with the chauffeur, among others—leave us certain that, should she have lived, the bold and spirited Crawley sister would have ruffled a few feathers in this fringed Alexander Wang dress.

The fashion plate of the family reads Vogue, attends fashion shows, tries out new hairstyles and is clearly unafraid of risk-taking—at least sartorially speaking. This high-slit dress might expose a fair amount of skin, but the neo-Victorian collar is pure English rose.

Poor Edith. Unlucky in love and life, but somehow she pulls things together. In later seasons we ve seen Edith evolve and experiment with flapper and Jazz Age styles, and this shimmering, velvet dress masters the era.

Downton’s resident moral compass, Isobel frequently has words with the Dowager Countess. The one thing they both agree on, however, is a sense of formality. This floral, floor-length sweeper from **Peter Copping’**s debut for Oscar de la Renta is haute but not haughty, much like Crawley herself.
