A classic bergamot and bitter and sweet orange cologne with hints of English lavender, Bulgarian rose, and sandalwood, this formula has gone unchanged since it was devised in Parma, Italy, 100 years ago. Billed as the first real Italian eau de cologne, Parma’s world-famous tailors used to scent their men’s handkerchiefs and made-to-measure wardrobe pieces with the same unisex aroma. It became legend once visiting American actors, like Cary Grant, started returning to L.A. with Parma suits—and colonia in their wakes.

Built around the medicinal preparations Dominican monks had been growing in the gardens next to the famous Florentine monastery of the same name, the Santa Maria Novella pharmacy has been doling out herbal balms and healing waters to the public since 1612. Now an internationally recognized purveyor of fine Italian apothecary mainstays, the beautiful brand boasts more than 30 different colognes. The bergamot, lemon, tangerine, and neroli Acqua di Sicilia is a standout, though, for its lavender, clove, and rosemary tweaks and the way it evokes the sunny flavors of southern Italy.

The successor to a popular line of ’60s-era aftershaves and eaux de toilette from local Ibiza jewelers Antonio and Pele Torres, this orange and lemon peel agua de colonia, as they say in Spanish, takes its cues from the Mediterranean party island’s locally grown flowers and herbs, like thyme, verbena, jasmine, lavender, and sage.

The latest additions to Hermès’s beloved eau de cologne line is also the first side-by-side offering from its long-reigning in-house perfumer, Jean-Claude Ellena, and his successor, Christine Nagel. For his fifth citrus-dominated scent, the South of France–born Ellena has tapped into his Mediterranean youth spent distilling neroli from sun-inflected orange blossoms, which get a hint of spice courtesy of saffron. Nagel’s cologne is more green than it is citrus, meant to evoke the sensation of inhaling the crisp smell of a rhubarb stem before it is picked from the garden. An infusion of white musk bolsters its freshness while adding a smooth finish.
