Hillary Clinton’s Style Evolution, From the ’60s to Today
Vogue has officially endorsed Hillary Clinton for president of the United States. While the candidate has never been particularly interested in fashion—she’s the first to make a self-deprecating joke about her pantsuits—we felt it was time to look back on Clinton’s career and draw some through-lines between her biggest milestones and best fashion moments. In the late ’60s, Clinton was in student government at Wellesley College and dressed like any woman of the era in groovy flares and leather sandals. Fast-forward to Bill’s first presidential campaign in the ’90s, and Hillary’s wardrobe consisted of headbands, soft tailoring, and gold jewelry. A particular blush pink skirt suit with a gold chain belt from ’94 has been making the rounds on Instagram, complete with #ImWithHer and #HillYes hashtags; it looks like something we’d be thrilled to find in a vintage store today.
Now, we know Clinton as a pantsuit connoisseur, and she’s tried every shade of the rainbow. During her current presidential campaign, she’s happily ditched those knee-length jackets for crisp, tailored suits by Ralph Lauren. If elected, we have a feeling she’ll have more RL suits in her future, as well as a chance to support young American talents, too.
