Fashion’s Favorite Young Photographer Jamie Hawkesworth Gets a New York Show Inline

I got to Moscow, then took a train to Irkutsk, then a bus and a ferry to Olkhon Island on Lake Baikal. I just get some kind of transport and walk around somewhere new and take photographs. I’d gotten my visa to go to Russia two days before. It’s always spur of the moment.”

I got up, got a train to Aberdeen, two ferries to the Shetland Isles, and then another ferry to one of the islands, Unst. When I got there, there was a pony competition going on. This girl came last. She took her helmet off, and her hair was just like that. You can sit inside and think, ‘Shall I go, is it worth it?’ and this always reminds me to get up and go and just take pictures.”

It was an incredible trip—as far as I could get away from Ipswich [his hometown] in every sense of the word!”

We were in South Shields [in the north of England] with a bag of clothes, and asked people to wear what we had brought. We asked this girl’s parents if we could shoot her. She had on a flowery dress, and we changed her into this Calvin Klein men’s suit. We stayed true to who she is and elevated her, which is really the essence of what a fashion image is.”

A stall owner had ran out of cotton candy, and the only way she could get it was by using a pram. I asked her to stop to get the picture. This image ended up on a J.W.Anderson sweater, and I have a photograph of Jay Z wearing it; to go from South Shields to Jay Z is a funny circle of events.”
