A Look Back at Louis Vuitton’s Architecturally Astounding Runway Sets
Outside of fashion, Nicolas Ghesquière’s primary obsession seems to be architecture. Not only is his Instagram chock-full of inspirational shots of Eero Saarinen buildings and other ’60s wonders, but he’s made a point of setting his Louis Vuitton shows in several architectural masterpieces around the world, and also of enlisting famous architects and artists to design special spaces just for LV. Tomorrow, Rio de Janeiro’s Niterói Contemporary Art Museum, designed by Oscar Niemeyer, will be the backdrop for his Resort 2017 collection. Louis Vuitton recruited French artist Justin Morin to design a mirrored Atlantis-like set for its Fall 2016 show. The futuristic wonderland served as a trippy backdrop to Ghesquière’s sporty and sleek designs and also provided guests with ample opportunities for an artsy selfie.

The design of the Space Age has long been an inspiration to Ghesquière, which means John Lautner’s Bob Hope house was a fitting locale for Ghesquière’s Resort 2016 show for Louis Vuitton. The brand took over the house’s interior and exterior spaces, parading models through the yard just as the sun set in Palm Springs, California.

Set designer Es Devlin constructed three mirrored domes on the property of the Fondation Louis Vuitton for the house’s Fall 2015 show and filled the interiors with orange risers and circular tunnels. The setting only lasted for the week of the show, but its otherworldly nature is still being talked about in fashion circles.
