Mejuri Launched its Year Of Action Committee With An Inspiring Dinner

Last week, Mejuri, the Toronto-headquartered fine and semi-fine jewelry brand loved by cool girls, gathered a handful of industry insiders for dinner in West Hollywood. Often, such gatherings take place for the sake of fashion (why need a reason to celebrate?) but the night was especially significant. Mejuri’s founder Noura Sakkijha ventured to the states and was joined by actor Sophia Bush and Don’t Ban Equality (a coalition of nonprofits advocating for reproductive rights) as co-hosts, to commence the launch of Mejuri’s Year of Action Committee, which joins Don’t Ban Equality in encouraging more brands to unite in the movement.

Founded in 2019, Don’t Ban Equality (comprised of entities such as Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America) has already recruited nearly 700 companies, including Nordstrom and Levi Strauss, to further its message—that the restriction of reproductive healthcare is, in addition to being physically and emotionally detrimental to individuals affected, “bad for business.” After reaching out to the organization, Sakkijha says she decided the best way to lend a helping hand was to use Mejuri’s community and platform to spread the word. Since, the jewelry purveyor has encouraged a handful of brands across various industries, including Tinder, Oui The People, and Nudestix, to join alongside them. “Ten or fifteen years ago, when I started my career, I was begging brands to spend the privilege of their platforms, and everyone said, ‘We don’t do politics,’” Bush said in front of the room of supporters after dinner had been served. “I can’t explain what it means to have a brand that is run by inspiring women have a vision for our communities, and create a coalition to inspire other brands to do the same. What I can say that I know you never would,” Bush went on, with a nod to Sakkijha, “is what we’re really doing is shaming the brands who won’t.”

Nearly filling the entire back portion of Melrose’s Olivetta restaurant, guests of the night included Alisha Boe, Lilly Singh, Mia Moretti, Logan Browning, Hilary Rhoda, Amanda Lim, Jamie Chung, Meena Harris, Zeuner Willis, and Yasmine Aker.

As the night grew, attendees toasted dirty martinis and passionfruit-infused cocktails, and enjoyed a family-style meal, including the restaurant’s highly-anticipated-among-guest pesto pasta, a festive way to kick off Mejuri’s six months of impactful work ahead.
