Michael Shannon Chose a Wild Shoe (and Slick Tux!) For the Emmys

Last night’s 2023 Emmy Awards were filled with classic suits and gowns on the red carpet—but the choice of shoes were decidedly more experimental, at least with many of the Hollywood gents in attendance. Did you catch Matty Matheson’s amazing fisherman sandals, or Donald Glover’s elegant Bode ballet flats? Boring dress shoes were officially out—and unexpected footwear was in. Nobody, however, did this better than actor Michael Shannon, who stole the show in a pair of Balenciaga’s extra-pointy Space Shoes. Designed in a shiny black rubber, they look like they’re from the year 5024, and ready for a NASA mission to Mars. “I love that I can slip right in, and I’m ready for lift off,” Shannon told Vogue of the bold accessory.

Shannon’s willingness to take a fashion risk on the step and repeat wasn’t for nothing. It was a big night for the actor, after all, who was nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie category, for his portrayal of George Jones in George Tommy (alongside Jessica Chastain as Tammy Wynette). “George had a vast life and was such a legend in country music,” says Shannon of the role. “His influence in music and culture runs deep. Seeing his exhibit at the Hall of Fame, that’s when it really sunk in for me.”

Given he was up for one of the main acting awards, Shannon made sure to show up in a special red carpet look for the last night s event (hence the avant-garde shoes). Clothing-wise. the star was also dressed by Balenciaga in a couture suit consisting of a raw-edged tuxedo jacket and trousers, paired with a white evening shirt and a crisp white bow tie. “I felt like a walking sculpture, and I love that it was made for me,” says Shannon, who instantly loved the sharp, boxy silhouette of the look. “The oversized fit reminded me of my costume from my play Waiting for Godot. Plus, it s comfortable for a tuxedo.”

Shannon’s stylist, Michael Fisher, adds that it was a seamless fashion collaboration between Shannon and Balenciaga designer Demna; He felt an instant connection between the way they both approach their work. “[They both have] a similar dedication to artistry,” says Fisher. “For me, their intensity evokes the highest level of craft, and brings art and concept to their respective trades while exploring norms and pushing forward. They re fearless!” Judging by his epic choice of footwear, would have to agree.
