5 Beauty Lessons We Learned at Milan Fashion Week
A cinematic feeling swept through Milan Fashion Week, infusing the most winning beauty looks with a powerful femininity and a dark new glamour. From brushed-out curls and reinvented cat-eyes to 1940s-inspired waves with a thoroughly modern twist, the most memorable moments shrugged off the no-makeup makeup and gym hair of recent seasons past—and, in the process, turned our favorite classics on their head. Here are the five beauty lessons we plan on putting into practice this week. Next stop, Paris.

The ultra-feminine method of taking up a little more space was spotted at Gucci—where artist Petra Collins amped up her signature red mane to cloud-like effect, and model Mical Bockru (shown) showed off shoulder-wide fluffy waves. At Stella Jean, faux ’fros matched fluffy textiles in texture—and, for those of us without natural curls, made an unexpected case for bringing back the old-school body wave.

The vampy, tough-edged lips seen in New York and London gave way to a merlot-tinged film-noir effect in Milan, heightening the sense of womanly drama at Bottega Veneta (shown).

Stylized waves and overtly feminine hair accessories looked refreshingly grown-up this season, with references ranging from Renaissance paintings to iconic 1940s movies. Dolce Gabbana bedecked wispy lengths with black bows and jewel-encrusted bands channeled an opulent charm, while Marni’s sleek, polished finger waves (shown) were the stuff of Hitchcock fantasies (see actress Joan Fontaine in Rebecca).

At shows like Roberto Cavalli and Versace (shown), smudges of kohl accented upper and lower lash lines with a blurred, drawn-out extension serving up a softer rendition on the anywhere, anytime go-to.
