9 Breakout Beauty Trends That Ruled at New York Fashion Week 2016
Another New York Fashion Week has ended, and looking back on our favorite hair and makeup ideas from the Fall 2016 collections, two burgeoning schools of thought seem to have taken hold when it comes to beauty. In one camp, whimsical pops of color and sweeping romantic statements looked fresh, from the soft fuzzy curls at Altuzarra to the loose glitter on lids at Tommy Hilfiger. Elsewhere, a darker, almost gothic undercurrent ran across mood boards—think the black lips at Rihanna’s Fenty x Puma show or the graphic, off-kilter bobs at Alexander Wang. The result was a captivating clash that’s brimming with enough transformative promise and fierce femininity to carry us on to London, Milan, and Paris. Here, nine trends we loved from the Fall 2016 shows.

Spotted at Prabal Gurung (shown), textured ponytails had a windswept, dreamy quality, while Blake Lively’s version took the trend into the realm of Hollywood golden girl front row at Michael Kors. Elsewhere, alternative twists on the traditional style—slicked back at Victoria Beckham, velvet-wrapped at Suno—proved there’s a variation for everyone.

When Gigi Hadid stomped down Rihanna’s Fenty x Puma runway sporting a matte-black pout, she sparked a newfound yen for dark lipstick that carried over to the rouge-noir stains at Rodarte (shown).

Starting with the bright smoky eyes seen on front row darlings Elle and Dakota Fanning at Saint Laurent’s L.A. show, glitter turned up everywhere this season. From subtle gold flecks pressed onto the lids at Tommy Hilfiger to Opening Ceremony’s holographic contour and Marc Jacobs’s twinkling painted finger waves (shown), a touch of sparkle is destined to make you shine.

According to backstage hairstylist Odile Gilbert, “curly, curly, curly” was the more-is-more hair message on the runways like Altuzarra, where models such as Binx Walton (shown) and Frederikke Sofie let their natural texture down for a dreamy look that also celebrated individuality.
