A heady celebration of individuality took place this week in New York, where models swayed down the runway with bold buzz cuts and bare skin. The most memorable shows played with that theme in compelling ways, and whether that meant a neon fishnet hair band at 3.1 Phillip Lim or a bright fuchsia pout at Marchesa, there was a cool, self-assured spirit of confidence in the air. Spring 2016 may be months away, but the season’s emerging trends are worth dipping into right now.

Textured waves had a more lived-in feel this season: At Michael Kors Collection (shown), Orlando Pita raked strands across foreheads, as though the models had been for a hair-whipping spin in a top-down convertible, while Altuzarra’s elegant half-up hairdos channeled easy polish, the style loosely tousled from the city breeze.

Backstage artists focused on perfecting the canvas by creating fresh, dewy complexions with minimal coverage. At Narciso Rodriguez, Dick Page left traces of makeup on the lower lids and glistening cheeks, as though models had sweated it off, while the girls at Alexander Wang enjoyed Diane Kendal’s favorite beauty regimen: moisturizer. Gucci Westman swapped highlighter for glow-inducing serum at Rag Bone, and over at Public School, two-minute preshow facials were all that the models required to look runway-ready.
