“Drama. She will stab your heart with her Louis Vuitton stilettos,” says Classen. “The opening takes ‘slayage’ to another level.”

“Ballerina Karole Armitage is one of my go-to references. I love ballet not only for its beauty, but for its fragility juxtaposed against its strength. Armitage has such a postmodern, almost punk vibe to her ballet style, which was an inspiration behind Valentino’s Fall collection. Selena and I had this idea to surprise the New York City fans with a little one-night-only look from Valentino. The dress was breathtaking and sparkled onstage with a glittery print of the midnight sky, which mirrored her video content.”

“Karl Lagerfeld made this killer look for us—we sent the creative brief, which was inspired by Metropolis and Ex Machina. I saw her character for act two as being a robotlike temptress. Rubber is her protection, her armor, from the technology world. She is in the world of woman and machine.”

“I had a dream about [Selena] in gold, and kept imagining a less futuristic, more Inca warrior version of the classic Thierry Mugler bodysuit. Jessica Jones, who worked with me on creating the dancers’ costumes, created this masterpiece overnight.”

“Act five is a celebration of Selena’s experiences, which we represent through color. Sonia Rykiel’s Julie de Libran created this vibrant rainbow disco bodysuit, which we paired with Louis Vuitton boots and a denim jacket from C2H4 that I deconstructed and sequined.”
