A Behind the Scenes Look at Stacy Martin’s Venice Film Festival Looks

This week, the annual Venice Film Festival kicked off, and considering the year’s absence of major Hollywood events, the red carpet glamour was a welcomed surprise. Thus far, its step and repeat has included mega star power including Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, and many more—all of whom brought their fashion A-game to the festival. One such star is French actor Stacy Martin, who premiered her new role in Nicole Garcia’s Lovers. “It’s a contemporary retelling of the classic love story triangle,” Martin tells Vogue. “What drew me initially was how mysterious and unpredictable [my character] is. She doesn’t obey any codes and is very passionate. Nicole Garcia has always portrayed characters in a very human and complex way.” During her appearances for the film’s premiere, Vogue took a behind-the-scenes look at the making of her red carpet outfits.

Martin says she was excited to premiere the film at the Venice Film Festival, an event that continues to be one of her favorites of the year. “This festival has a very special place in my heart,” says Martin. “There’s a real feeling of celebration and hope for the future of cinema, and it shows how art can be resilient and survive such times.” For the festival, Martin worked with stylist Rebecca Corbin-Murray on three looks for the film premieres: one for the photocall, one for press interviews, and one for the official red carpet. For all, Corbin-Murray wanted to play up Martin’s innate style. “She’s definitely got that French, effortless style,” she says. “She always turns up in my studio in jeans and a T-shirt and still looks cool. Her choices as an actor are always interesting, and that’s reflected in her fashion choices as well—she likes interesting, unique pieces.”

For the photocall, Corbin-Murray styled her in a black dress with a sleek white cape, from Louis Vuitton’s resort 2021 collection. “It’s a little understated,” says Corbin-Murray. For the red carpet, the pair chose an embroidered, black and white dress from the label’s fall 2020 collection that read more evening-ready. “It’s a really interesting collection, it was based around looking at what the past would look like [now],” says Corbin-Murray. The dress they chose from the collection is a style that Martin had actually seen on the runway and remembered. “I wanted something strong with a touch of simplicity,” says Martin. “The dress has these great leather shoulder straps to hold up the delicate, hand-sewn embroidery.” An emerald and diamond necklace in white gold, from Vuitton’s High Jewelry collection, gave it a movie star-worthy finish.
