“I’m here to celebrate our Vogue cover!” Amy Schumer announced, holding up the brand-new January 2020 issue featuring Stella McCartney and her children. Schumer was kidding, of course—she got her own cover three years ago—but was just as excited to celebrate her dear friend’s big moment. On a miniature stage in the basement of McCartney’s SoHo flagship store, Schumer played host for the designer’s annual holiday party, which usually takes place in London. “With the Vogue cover and our new Stan Smiths, it felt like a good time to throw a party in New York,” McCartney said over Zuri Marley’s DJ set.
Many of her friends in attendance—Schumer, Kacey Musgraves, Amber Valletta, Jimmy Fallon, Jerry Seinfeld, Karlie Kloss, Kate Hudson, and David Byrne—were modeling those Stan Smiths, McCartney’s second vegan iteration for Adidas. These were updated with rainbow-striped stars on the sides and matching technicolor laces, and just launched online and in stores worldwide. Every element of the sneaker is vegan—even the glue, which is often made with animal tissue—in keeping with the guidelines McCartney has set for her own collection. (Chloë Sevigny opted for fall 2019’s epic platforms while Musgraves wore a spiky vegan-leather bootie.
After Schumer “turned on the lights”—McCartney’s tradition for kicking off the holiday season—the stage lit up behind her, and so did the crowd. Unlike rigid events with lengthy speeches and scheduled performances, this one was a genuinely good time, with guests sipping tequila and trying on light-up jewelry placed throughout the store. At one point, Fallon danced on stage with Brooklynn Prince, and Marley performed a few songs with Quiet Luke. McCartney mostly seemed excited to dance and reconnect with friends, but she certainly had a lot to “Stella-brate,” as her team cheekily put it. The Vogue cover is the cherry on top of a major year for her brand, including some big strides in sustainability and countless product launches. As for what she’s celebrating next, McCartney feigned exhaustion: “I can’t even keep up with all of the things we’re working on!” she joked. “But we definitely have some exciting news coming up.” Suffice it to say, 2020 is looking like a good year too.
