The world of sustainable fashion is not what it used to be. Once something of a grassroots movement, spearheaded by a few scrappy, young designers with the climate crisis on their minds, it’s grown over the years into an industry-wide effort to both produce and consume textiles more responsibly. While at Prada, for instance, that’s meant creating a line of nylon bags from recycled ocean plastics, at Creatures of the Wind and CDLM, Chris Peters and Shane Gabier have gotten to work assembling pieces from vintage and deadstock fabrics.
Of the London set, Stella McCartney has long been a leader in this area, eschewing leather and fur before it became de rigueur; and, since launching her swim and ready-to-wear business in 2000, Mara Hoffman has partnered with eco-organizations like Fabscrap, the Renewal Workshop, and the Blue Business Council to help mitigate the manufacturing cycle’s more harmful effects. But, day by day, there seem to be ever more ways to buy into the movement: Just this month, Misha Nonoo released the Smart Set Capsule Collection, a line of sustainably made workwear designed with her friend the Duchess of Sussex, and earlier this year, Erin Beatty announced her new line of upcycled separates, Rentrayage—French for “mending.”
