Over the last two months, five people I know have gotten dogs. Two more applied for puppies that will be ready to bring home in August. Even my own mother and I have spent several isolated weekend afternoons on the phone, very seriously scouring the web for some iteration of a doodle that our family could adopt. We’ve even decided on names, despite the fact that we both know (but won t admit to each other) that we’ll never bring any single one of the adorable dogs home.
It’s not just my social circle that is keen on a new pet. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the number of people wanting to foster a dog in L.A. and New York has doubled. It makes sense: during isolation, the days that were once spent in office buildings are now passing uninterrupted at home. Add to that how the future feels quite uncertain, and suddenly it’s clear that having a pet around to provide entertainment and extra affection is a good enough reason to actually follow through this time.
