Change your hair, change your confidence, change your life. There is no beauty brand who knows this quite as well as TRESemmé, the longtime official hair sponsor of New York Fashion Week. For 26 seasons, the Unilever-owned brand has been a force backstage, busy churning out some of the biggest and most sought-after hair trends in the industry. The key to their success, besides having an expert team that works around-the-clock season after season, is the efficacy and the wide-ranging results their products have to offer.
Take, for instance, the romantic and whimsical hair at Jonathan Simkhai’s Spring 2018 show. This magazine called it a season for escapism and fairytale beauty—and TRESemmé’s lead stylist, Odile Gilbert, most certainly delivered. The light and airy collection of jersey tops, handkerchief skirts and striped asymmetric wrap dresses was met with windswept curls that were twisted to dream-like effect. With the help of TRESemmé’s Keratin Smooth Heat Protectant Spray, models’ texturized top strands were softer and smoother, not to mention protected from the heat when piled high and pinned over, as if the lengths were crowns unto themselves.
Fast forward to the spring of 2020, when perfectly imperfect hair still reigned supreme. Case in point: Rebecca Minkoff’s debut of her eco-friendly children’s line was playful and full of life, with pops of rainbow colors and unexpected moments, from the model babies to the hair statements, which were detailed but charmingly disheveled. Marjan drove the beauty look, this time with TRESemmé’s Dry Texture Finishing Spray, by recreating variations of bohemian-style fishtail braids depending on each models’ lengths. The spray, which offers a flexible hold that is not stiff, was used to help make waves, to guide braided strands together and to finish it all off. The goal was to make it look like there wasn’t a lot of fuss around the hair, said the hair stylist at the time. Of course, to achieve that, it took some fuss.
Ponytails are easy to come by – they’re great for work, the gym and a night out with friends. But a great ponytail? That’s a harder feat. For Christian Siriano’s Spring 2020 runway, Marjan looked to DC comic hero Harley Quinn, whose neon-colored strands are nothing short of iconic. For a collection that was full of vividly bright blazers, iridescent jackets and hot pink minidresses, the seasoned stylist kept the above-neck look clean in the front, slicking back hair with TRESemmé Extra Hold Hair Gel at the roots. As for the back? That’s where the hair party was, with mid waist-length ponytails that were flat-ironed straight and featured pops of pink and blue extensions. Consider it the cleaned-up hair look for the modern-day superhero.
While we’re looking back, it’s worth noting the hair art that was created for Studio 189’s Spring 2020 show entitled, “Heritage.” The line, which was founded by Rosario Dawson and Abrima Erwiah, celebrated African culture and ancestry not only with optimistic pieces – colorful mixed prints, intricate patchwork and embroideries filled the runway – but also with authentic beauty looks, which ranged from a variety of braids to sculpturesque top knots to free-flowing natural curls that were kept tight or combed out and up. Not one hairstyle was the same as the next – a point, no doubt, the design duo and celebrity hair stylist Ursula Stephens wanted to make. In fact, the only thru line when elevating everyone’s natural beauty was the use of TRESemmé’s Extra Hold Aerosol Hair Spray. It’s defining and humidity-resistant and, with a spray that s dry, never sticky, makes hair control and comfort top priorities. Just like the brand behind the product, and so many New York runways past.
