There is no doubt about it: J. Lo gave us the most epic moment of Milan Fashion Week. The music, movie, and fashion goddess shut it all down when she closed the Versace show wearing a new version of the iconic jungle-print dress that literally birthed Google Images back when she wore it to the Grammys in 2000. But J. Lo’s bold print notwithstanding, it seems minimalism is more in fashion right now in Milan.
This was the case on the runways, as Miuccia Prada showed a sharp, wearable, pared-down everyday wardrobe, and Gucci’s Alessandro Michele explored a cleaner, monochrome palette rather than his usual eclectic mash-up of genres, muses, and materials. On the streets, show attendees seemed to favor subtlety too. There was head-to-toe white; basic blazers and turtlenecks; and beige layered on top of beige. Sneakers were the shoes of choice, as were sturdy boots and simple sandals. It was as if the Milan Fashion Week cadre banded together to officially say arrivederci to the bold prints and statement-making accessories that this city is typically known for.
It was certainly a new kind of la dolce vita, one that leans into timeless, classic silhouettes and easy, organic colors. It’s also a fine idea for a way to dress this season. Below, find five ways to make minimalism look as good on you as it does on Milan’s intrepid street-style set.
