The flip-flop heel was the controversial shoe of summer—and it’s been carrying into fall, too. Celebrities such as Kim Kardashian West and Katie Holmes have been rocking that ’90s-inspired thong over the past month, cementing its status as the season’s trickiest accessory trend. But leave it to Victoria Beckham to lay down a new challenge. The designer and fashion plate hit the streets of New York City today wearing a stiletto that’s almost as divisive as the flip-flop heel. Meet the peep-toe boot.

Neither open-toe nor closed-toe, Beckham’s bright red stretch boots showcase just a hint of her pedicure. The hybrid style is from her own label, and it is one that she has worn a few times before. While it’s a dash impractical for late fall (one’s toes are left exposed to the bone-chilling winds!), the design is very much in line with the designer’s love for pin-thin heels.

She styled the statement shoes with a color-blocked ensemble consisting of a lilac sweater (worn above a white collared shirt) and a long red skirt. She finished off the look with her signature shield sunglasses.
