How Stylist Rebecca Corbin-Murray Plays Up Florence Pugh’s “Mad, Quirky” Fashion Instincts 

Right now, Florence Pugh is one of Hollywood’s most exciting new stars. Last year, the 24-year-old English actor saw success with two breakout roles in Midsommar and Little Women—and for the latter film, Pugh portrayed Amy March, earning herself a 2020 Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In honor of the upcoming awards ceremony, Vogue caught up with Pugh’s stylist Rebecca Corbin-Murray to discuss all things red carpet fashion.

While Pugh is a relative newcomer to the awards circuit, she’s wasted no time cultivating a signature look on the step and repeat. Much of that is thanks to her ongoing collaborations with Corbin-Murray, who has been working with the actress for two years now. During Pugh’s rise to stardom, Corbin-Murray has followed the star’s grueling film schedule, styling her for the handful of press events that she’s had time to attend. But even during their short time together, the stylist said Pugh has made her vision and tastes for fashion crystal clear.

“Florence is very true to herself,” said Corbin-Murray. “She loves bold, colorful, interesting shapes—anything avant-garde, or a little bit mad and quirky, really gives her joy.” The stylist added that the actress is always up for a fun fashion moment, and is never one to play it safe; she also has an emotional approach to the things she wears. “She really feels out looks when she’s trying them, and intuitively decides what she’s vibing with,” she said. “She loves to be unexpected and has a playful, joie de vivre attitude when it comes to choosing looks.”

This energetic attitude was especially visible during Pugh’s recent Little Women press tour, when Pugh often embraced vibrant color and glitzy details. Corbin-Murray also infused more specific odes to the film through the garments she dressed the star in. “There was one particular custom look from Emilia Wickstead, who based her spring 2020 show on Little Women, which was a nod to the film,” said the stylist, referring to a pink and white gingham dress that Pugh wore in December. Label-wise, Corbin-Murray said Pugh is mostly drawn to designers who infuse their pieces with a certain standard of craftsmanship, and couture-like qualities. “She also loves contemporary brands like Ganni, Reformation, Racil, Alexa Chung, Shrimps, Rachel Antonoff, and Staud,” she added.
