“I don’t know what happened, but I hit my 30s and suddenly I wanted to dress like I attend boarding school. Maybe it’s my way to attempt to reclaim my fading youth,” explains Michelle Zauner in this episode of 7 Days, 7 Looks. Author of The New York Times best-selling book, Crying in H Mart, and the musician behind the indie-pop band Japanese Breakfast, Zauner has cultivated a style that’s all her own.
“I really like dressing this way now. It feels like a fun uniform, a little sharp, a little edgy,” she continues to say, dressed in a mini Sandy Liang dress and a pair of over-the-knee boots from Prada. And how could she not? Her closet is full of her favorite brands including Sandy Liang, Rodarte, Thom Browne, and Simone Rocha. You can expect Zauner’s accessories collection to be top-notch too, from a pair of Miu Miu’s platform ballet flats to Frye Powers’ colorful jewelry. In addition to playful accessories, Zauner is embracing color more than ever before, ditching her all-black stage hand uniform for poofy pink princess dresses by Simone Rocha and a lot of yellow, which just so happens to be the theme color of her album “Jubilee.”

Monday: Classic Michelle
If you couldn’t tell by her dress and flower fleece, one of Zauner’s go-to New York labels is Sandy Liang. She dresses up this pleated pinafore with a chain belt and a pointed collar blouse. “I can wear a thigh boot and it still feels casual.”
Tuesday: After-Party Look
“I love to wear a big dress at an after-party because it’s an instant talking piece,” says Zauner while flouncing around in a puffed sleeve frock by Simone Rocha. “[It] makes me feel like a giant jiggly puff.” Meanwhile, a “giant platform” gives her the “height I need to feel powerful.” The most important part? “I can express my full femininity and still rock a stage.”
Wednesday: On-Stage Style
After Zauner wore a sparkly Rodarte two-piece for her performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she starred in the brand’s 2021 Pre-Fall campaign. “I love all of Rodarte’s clothes,” she notes, “they’re the kind of clothes I never imagined that I would get to wear and it has been a joy to get to know the designers.” With short sleeves and lots of shine, it’s the perfect look for a hot festival stage. “Who doesn’t love a sequin jumpsuit?”
Thursday: Author Duties
In a sharp white tailored Thom Browne short suit complete with the designer’s signature striped knee-high socks, Zauner explains, “author Michelle is a little less extra than Japanese Breakfast Michelle… It makes me feel like Luke Wilson in The Royal Tenenbaums” she jokes. And while she loves her jewelry pieces and shoes, the only accessory she wants to talk about is her book, Crying in H Mart.
Friday: Summer Outfits
Between running errands or lunch with friends, a pair of Miu Miu’s mega platform ballet flats are what Zauner describes as the “perfect summer shoe.” They go effortlessly with her citrus-colored set from label, Mirror Palais.
Saturday: On the Red Carpet
“My mom would be so proud to see me on the red carpet in a Valentino gown.” In addition to her beautiful floor-length red carpet dress, Zauner is carrying a very meaningful bag: Her Mom’s black Chanel. “I always wear this bag when I go to a really important meeting or event,” like when she got her book deal she recalls, “it just gives me power and it makes it feel like my mom is with me.”
Sunday: On the Road Look
“I sleep in a moving bus, so I have to be very comfortable,” Zauner describes while talking about her on-tour style, dressed in her favorite T-shirt she bought in Seoul (it has a Cheetos snack logo on it), a pair of kid’s Gucci slides, plaid pants in her signature yellow, and a “J. Brekky” dad hat. “An oversized snack brand tee expresses who I am, just a goofy gal.”
