Dress Code: Gabriella Khalil Never Shies Away From a Power Outfit
Allow Dress Code to demystify and debunk what to wear when and where, and how to wear it, as advised by those whose innate style never fails to inspire and influence.
Every once in a while, a multi-faceted creative director comes along whose name seems to be involved in every place and collaboration you want to know more about. Such is the case with hospitality and design entrepreneur Gabriella Khalil, who brings a globally-minded approach to everything she touches in her line of work—and similarly, in how she compiles a scene-stealing look. Most recently, the always-polished arbiter of taste partnered with ethical fine jewelry line EREDE on a capsule of refined pieces that embody her personal style. To celebrate? A dinner fete at her latest downtown design project Waters (word has it Beyoncé is already a fan of the eatery.) It was an opportune time to steal a moment to hear what goes through her head when she needs to dial things up in the outfit department.
What s your process for getting dressed? Do you make an effort even when you don t have to go anywhere?
My day to day uniform is typically some version of baggy jeans, great boots, and a bodysuit—then I go heavy on statement jewelry pieces to bring the look together. I really try to make an effort, even if I am not seeing anyone, but I also have days when I go with sweats and sneakers and that feels great too. As long as I am feeling productive and positive, I dress in what makes me happy.
When you want to feel confident—what boxes does your outfit need to tick?
I prefer a tailored and sleek look. I love adding a great shoe, whether it’s classic or statement, and my jewelry staples keep me uplifted. And a good hair moment—a ponytail or all down. I look for classic pieces that I am comfortable in, but also make me feel confident.
A breakfast event pops up for tomorrow. What’s a failsafe outfit you for an early morning?
I always turn to a really good jacket to elevate an outfit—especially at the last minute. This could be a blazer, which I’ll pair with jeans and a heel. Otherwise, I love a leather jacket or even an oversized bomber jacket for a casual but chic look.
What type of dress code fills you with dread? And what’s your workaround for that?
If there’s no dress code or understanding of the type of event—that fills me with uncertainty. I always prefer to really understand the dress code. In times when I am unsure, I will stick to elevated and classic tailored pieces that feel fancy enough to work for either cocktail or casual vibes. I would say my general rule, though, is to be more dressed up than too casual…it never hurts!
A luncheon is on the calendar. How might you approach putting together a look for that?
I love a pencil skirt, boots, and a simple top with great accessories to match. This is my go-to, more often than not.
What are your thoughts on costume parties? All in with the DIY, or politely decline?
I don’t really go to that many. Usually my initial reaction is an eye roll, but then when I get into the theme, I have fun and I love it! Deep down, I love a themed party, but they do take a lot of extra work. I went to a party a few years ago where the dress code was to only wear red, white, or black. It was one of my favorite parties because it felt so thematic and the palette was really strong for the event, but it also only required little effort on my part to find a look.
