The Headstrong Project’s Annual Words of War Gala

Last night in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood, a high-wattage crew including Adam Driver and Jake Gyllenhaal assembled for the Headstrong Project’s annual Words of War Gala. The actors as well as other guests including Lily Aldridge, Jill Kargman, and Zani Gugelmann are active supporters of the non-profit, whose goal is to provide mental health resources and help for returning veterans. Founder Zach Iscol has raised the profile of the organization through events like last night’s program, which included a reading from Gyllenhaal and a panel discussion moderated by late-night funnyman Seth Meyers, the evening’s host. But Iscol believes more can be done. “Over the next year, we’d like to grow to six additional cities. And change the national discourse on PTSD from getting help as a sign of weakness to a sign of strength and courage,” said Iscol. That message resonated with actress Makenzie Leigh, who stars opposite actor Joe Alwyn in the upcoming film Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk about a returning veteran. “What the movie focuses on is the particular isolation that veterans experience when they return and rejoin society,” said Leigh. “The lesson I’ve internalized is that we all have such a duty to recognize and try and close that gap.” The evening also honored Brandon Stanton, better known for his Humans of New York blog, which chronicled the non-profit and its mission this summer telling veterans’ stories. But as the evening came to a close, it was Meyers who reiterated the goal of the evening. “Headstrong takes a unique approach to veteran treatment while also working tirelessly to destigmatize PTSD.”
