Welcome to Addressed, a weekly column where we, ahem, address the joys (and tribulations!) of getting dressed. So far, we’ve unpacked how to wear shorts at the office and beyond, how to pack a carry-on bag for a work trip, how to dress with style in your third trimester, and even how to layer without looking like that chair in your room (you know the one). Download the Vogue app, and find our Style Advice section to submit your question.
It is finally happening. “The Best Band on the Planet” is back together, and after a month-and-a-half touring Europe, they guys will finally descend on American shores this week. Yes, I am obviously talking about the Oasis reunion tour, where brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher have finally patched up decades of feuds and resentments, and have embarked on one of the most important tours of the year. Just how important, you ask? Please refer to Vogue’s resident Oasis super-fan Corey Seymour, who wrote about attending the band’s show at Wembley Stadium in July.)
Because we are living in a time where method dressing has become de rigueur—and because my friends and I miraculously managed to snag tickets to one of the Metlife Stadium shows—I thought I’d go all-in on how to dress to celebrate Oasis’s return.
Growing up, the rules dictated that when attending a show, you never wore a t-shirt by the band on the stage (Corey agrees with me on this one), but it seems this Oasis tour has become the exception. The band has released a killer line of merch—plus another capsule collection in collaboration with Adidas—which they’ve made a point of selling ahead of their shows, subverting the idea of the band tee as a souvenir in the process. The brothers Gallagher are making a killing on pre-show merch, but there is something genuinely heartwarming about the fact that so many people are choosing this route, proudly showing up in matching Oasis jerseys and t-shirts not unlike the way sport fans wear their player’s jersey at a football match.
(Coincidentally, the brothers are perhaps Manchester City’s most famous fans, so if you’re still too old-school to wear merch to the show, a Man City jersey will work just fine—especially if it’s the one co-designed by Noel and inspired by the cover of Definitely Maybe.)
The Basics
The Gallaghers do have some style touchstones that should be the starting point for every concert-goer—these include bucket hats, Stone Island parkas, and Adidas track jackets (hey! that collaboration didn’t just come out of nowhere). The parka seems a little too warm for the late summer weather, but the track jacket might not stand up to the chilly winds in a stadium. Either way, wear them zipped or buttoned all the way up (for a touch of Liam), or modestly undone (à la Noel).
A Tambourine-As-Accessory
Another key Liam accessory is the tambourine. No one has ever done more for the humble instrument. You should totally consider wearing one around your neck as a necklace (bonus, it feels very Margiela), or maybe even fasten it to your bucket hat in a sort of homage to the way the singer balances the tambourine on his head during performances.
Glasses
Both Noel and Liam love a pair of statement sunglasses—although it’s the latter who has made them part of his performance uniform. If you want to incorporate a pair into your concert attire, we recommend small, round Lennon-style lenses, though any kind of rimless styles will fit the bill. Have a pair with tinted yellow lenses? Definitely go for them.
A Floral Printed Shirt
Consider this a deep-cut take on Oasis style. Have a close-fitting floral button-down shirt in your closet? Now is the perfect time to bring it out.
A Lil’ Boy Polo
Britpop had nothing to do with skater style, but there was a bit of cross-pollinating happening among the different subcultures in the 1990s. A boyish polo—bonus if it has a retro striped design—is the perfect topper for your wide-leg jeans and trainers.
Desert Boots and Wallabees
Adidas trainers may be the standard shoe of our time, but they were also among the Britpop era’s premiere footwear, along with the maybe lesser-known but no less important desert boots, aka Wallabees. (The Verve’s Richard Ashcroft, who opened the European dates of the Oasis reunion tour famously wore a chocolate pair of desert boots in the “Bittersweet Symphony” music video.) If this feels more like your vibe, may I recommend a pair of Martine Rose collabo Wallabees in shiny croc-stamped leather?
A Shrunken Denim Jacket
This is totally the time to go for a full-on Canadian tuxedo moment, especially if you have a tight-fitting jean jacket that’s worn away in all the right places.
The Right Rock Roll Attitude
The point is to go to the show, sing your lungs out, cry your eyes out, and have the best time with your mates.
