The last time she attended the Golden Globes, Amal Clooney’s Dior haute couture dress—or more specifically, the white opera gloves she chose to wear with it—set in motion a mini internet storm. The critics of the blogosphere (and morning television) did not approve of the newlywed’s old-school choice, which was deemed more appropriate for a prom queen or a debutante, and which inspired its own short-lived @msclooneygloves Twitter account. One assumes the international human rights barrister (and Mrs. George Clooney) does not trouble herself too much with online red-carpet commentary—but it may be part of the reason she skipped the Globes for the next 10 years running.
Clooney made quite the return tonight, in a form-fitting ruched red dress (vintage Balmain, from the haute couture fall 1957 collection) emblematic of the bombshell style she has honed over the past decade. There to support husband George, who is nominated for his performance in Jay Kelly as best male actor in a motion picture musical or comedy, Amal added diamond drop earrings, a matching diamond bracelet, and a neat box clutch in that same traffic-stopping shade of red. (And not an opera glove in sight.)
Though her double Oscar-winner of a husband is an awards season veteran, Amal is selective about the ceremonies she attends. She has never accompanied George to the Academy Awards, but she can usually be tempted by a trip to Cannes (she appeared at the festival last summer in Galliano-era Dior), and she’ll naturally always clear space in her diary for the Albies—the annual gala established by the Clooney Foundation for Justice back in 2022.
