Let’s face it: being a supporting character in the Sex and the City-slash-And Just Like That universe can be challenging. With all eyes on the original holy trinity—Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte (Kristin Davis)—new cast members have to work twice as hard to earn a memorable place in the reboot. That s not to say that supoorting characters haven’t shined throughout the series. Let’s pour one out for “whatever happened to fun?!” Lexi Featherston and Amalita. But this season, one thing is clear: Seema is cementing her place as a legacy character, thanks to her unbothered energy and downright fabulosity.
A luxury real estate broker, with the chic wardrobe to match, Seema has had several iconic moments throughout the past two AJLT seasons. Remember when she got her brown Birkin bag stolen? Or when she was extremely relatable in her persisting singleness? But only one episode into season three, and Seema, brilliantly played by Sarita Choudhury, is already shining brighter than ever. Watch out Carrie—Seema is my leading lady of the series.
In the first episode this season, we meet Seema again as she is trying to keep the romance alive with her boyfriend Ravi, who is off in Egypt making a film. (A Marvel movie director? Love that for her.) She decks herself out in full-on lingerie for their Zoom date, only for Ravi’s assistant to keep her waiting for hours, to no avail. (Hate that for her.) She then falls sleep with a lit cigarette, lighting her bed (and some of her hair) on fire. Dramatic? Yes, but she essentially represents all the hoops many of us jump through for undeserving men. My queen, we see you and empathize with you!
When Ravi finally gets into town, he then promises to take Seema out to lunch at Jean-Georges to make up for it—only to bring her along on a location-scouting trip that eats up their entire day. Fed up, she proceeds to swiftly dump him (in a fabulous white fringed dress, no less). As she should. She deserved that bougie martini lunch! We love to see a diva who knows her worth. If AJLT fans are still mourning the loss of the über-confident Samantha, Seema is here to fill that void: She is not to be messed with.
And don’t even get me started on her glamorous fashions. Her polished pieces make you want to spend millions on a Tribeca penthouse. When she goes for an ice cream stroll with Carrie in the park, you may have been distracted by Carrie’s ginormous chapeau, but Seema looked perfectly elegant in her tonal look, complete with khaki trousers and a halter top. (I even love that her neutral-heavy wardrobe matches the luxurious brown Bentley that she’s driven around in.)
Whereas many AJLT characters prefer to peacock and out-bold each other, Seema prefers to quietly blend in with her stealthy-chic looks. Her style reads expensive, never too try-hard. That low-key energy matches her personality as a whole: She stays moisturized and unbothered, mostly minding her own business while poppingin and out of scenes to offer quippy commentary when needed. She shines, even from the sidelines—and that, folks, is the making a true It girl. We can already feel it: This will be the season of Seema.
