Archive Store Is The Shibuya Hotspot That’s More Museum Than Vintage Store

“There has long been a debate about whether fashion is art or just fashion,” says Tatsuyuki Suzuki, manager of Archive Store in Tokyo’s Shibuya district. Suzuki presides over the store’s meticulously curated and preserved collection, including a piece from Comme des Garçon’s spring 2018 collection. “It’s not art to be worn, but I think it’s something close to it,” he says of the jacket, which is printed with a painting by 16th-century artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo.

Though Shibuya is known for its plethora of vintage shopping stores, Archive Store operates a little differently. Suzuki explains that the store “exhibits and sells archives from fashion magazines, with a focus on designer labels.” In practice, the experience is more similar to an art museum, considering the store’s gallery-worthy pieces, like one Maison Margiela jacket from fall 1992, which is protected under a glass case. Suzuki presides over the Archive Store’s collection just as a museum director would, dedicated to preservation and exhibiting a keen eye for lesser known archival details. Other rarities include a pair of Margiela fall 1995 artisanal trousers, which feature a now-defunct labeling system inside the waistband—a truly unique thing to witness, for any fashion die-hard.
