The British Academy of Film and Television Arts have announced their 2019 nominees, and among some anticipated nods—namely 12, including Best Picture, for the excellent 18th-century period comedy-drama The Favourite—it was A Star Is Born that made headlines, despite being largely snubbed at the Golden Globes, with seven nominations, five of which were for Bradley Cooper (Best Film, Leading Actor, Best Director, Adapted Screenplay, and Original Music categories). It’s a first in BAFTA’s 72-year history, the organization told The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday. (Cooper broke a record previously held by George Clooney, who received four BAFTA nominations in 2005: Best Director, Supporting Actor, and Screenplay for Good Night, and Good Luck, and Best Supporting Actor for Syriana.)
Alfonso Cuarón picked up six nominations for the critically adored Roma (Best Film, Foreign-Language Film, Director, Cinematography, Editing, and Original Screenplay), Bohemian Rhapsody, which staged something of an upset at the Globes, was recognized again here, receiving seven nominations, and Adam McKay’s audience-dividing Vice received six. Spike Lee, meanwhile, earned his first-ever BAFTA nod for BlackKkKlansman. It was also the sixth year in a row that no women were nominated for Best Director. Who will win on February 10? Will it, as many critics maintain, presage anything come Academy Awards time? You’ll have to tune in to find out. See the full list of 2019 BAFTA nominations below.
