“Remember that the secret to beauty is how you speak to yourself,” says KPop Demon Hunters singer Audrey Nuna. It also helps when your friends and bandmates hype you up with empowering phrases such as: “The cuteness fat is cuteness fat-ing!” While sharing their Beauty Secrets with Vogue, Nuna, Ejae, and Rei Ami—a.k.a. the trio behind Huntr/x—reveal their favorite K-beauty products, including the ones that help create the “cuteness fat” (aegyo-sal) that’s so coveted in Korea.
While the Grammy-award-winning singers do their eye makeup, Ejae says, “I use the Dasique eye shadow for my aegyo-sal. Aegyo-sal is this undereye fat…,” she begins, before Ami adds, “…that Koreans really love because they think it’s cute.” While Ejae applies a swirl of Dasique’s peach, pink, and taupe shadows to her lids and undereyes, Ami takes a moment to shout out another K-beauty favorite, proclaiming: “Clio Kill Lash Mascara is the best mascara to ever exist.”
Meanwhile, Ejae primes her lashes with the Etude Dr. Mascara Fixer, then applies Clio eyeliner and her favorite Holika Holika mascara. Next, she picks up her R&nd contour palette to finish what she started with her undereyes. “Back to aegyo-sal! It all comes back to aegyo-sal,” Nuna quips.
To demonstrate, Ejae smiles to form creases below her eyes, then dusts some brown powder onto the area. “It created an eye bag,” she notes, with a smile that says: My work here is done.
Representing Korean beauty and talent is important to the trio, whose song Golden became the first-ever K-pop song to win a Grammy this year (both the song and the film it came from, KPop Demon Hunters, are also nominated at the Oscars). “We didn’t have a lot of people who looked like us represented in the media, beauty icons that we could really see ourselves in,” Nuna says. “Do you guys feel a sense of responsibility to be that for this generation now?”
Without missing a beat, Ejae answers: “One hundred million percent. That’s why the Grammy was important to me; it was for that representation.”
