In 2017, fashion’s approach to accessorizing could be summed up as simply: “the weirder, the better.” How else do you explain the rise of designer Crocs and Balenciaga’s patently strange Triple S sneakers (never mind the fact that apparently Bella Hadid is into them)? We were curious to see if Vogue Runway’s Instagram followers felt the same way, so we polled you on the year’s best sunglasses, handbags, statement earrings, boots, and more. We were surprised by a few of the results—read them all below.
A Touch of Kink: Opera-Length Gloves vs. Feathered Bras
The fashion world loved the feathery bras and corsets layered over coats at Maison Margiela, but they only earned 32 percent of your votes. Perhaps the bra-as-outerwear trend will take a few more years to go mainstream—until then, try a pair of opera-length gloves, which will lend your favorite LBD a subtle dose of kink.
The Wildest Sunglasses: Big and Bold vs. Matrix Vibes
Tiny, impractical sunglasses were on the rise this year, despite the fact that they don’t do much in the way of UV protection. Sixty-one percent of you voted for Miu Miu’s square pair, while Gucci’s oversize, rhinestone-studded frames earned 39 percent. Perhaps less really is more?
The New Bag to Covet: Small and Structured vs. Ultra Slouchy
As our lives grow ever more reliant on technology—namely our iPhones—we don’t need to carry as much stuff around. Mansur Gavriel’s small round top-handle would fit the bare necessities, and it earned a whopping 76 percent of your vote. Céline’s giant, collapsible tote makes a different kind of statement, but we’re still expecting to see tons of editors carrying it next season.
The Plastic Accessory: PVC Shoes vs. PVC Bags
Whether you prefer a see-through bag or transparent shoes, both options require you to bare it all. (Pro tip: They’re great for rainy days.) Chanel’s cobalt tote won in the end with 78 percent of your vote; who can resist those double-Cs?
The Statement Earring: Hoops vs. Heirloom Jewels
Many jewelry designers will tell you 2017 was the year of the hoop, particularly supersize hoops inspired by the ’90s. We figured they’d be the clear winner here, but heirloom-inspired jewelry, like Dolce Gabbana’s pearly drops, actually won 60 percent of the vote. No matter which ones you prefer, you can bet there will be more statement earrings to come in 2018.
Shoe Porn: Comfy or Classy?
We couldn’t get enough of Louis Vuitton’s cushy, futuristic sneakers, but you clearly favored Valentino’s classic bow pumps. They earned 58 percent of your vote and might just signal a return of the stiletto. Here’s our compromise: Wear your LV trainers to work, then swap them out for Valentino’s nine-to-five-appropriate heels.
The Must-Have Hat: Sun Hats vs. Bucket Hats
Both of these hats belong on a beach, but which one is giving you greater wanderlust? The hippieish bucket hats at Michael Kors have ’90s nostalgia going for them, but Jacquemus’s way-oversize sun hat won with 69 percent of your vote. The swishy yellow sarong might have helped, too.
The Boot of the Moment: Western Boots vs. Witchy Boots
Cowboy boots are having a moment, from Givenchy (above) to Calvin Klein. But the spiky, subversive booties we’ve been seeing for a few seasons still hold major appeal; the “witchy” boots at Saint Laurent won 58 percent of your vote.
