Summertime is all fun in the sun, until someone gets burned. While face sunscreens are a staple in most skin-care regimes, the best body sunscreens are oft-overlooked products that deserve more of the limelight—especially for those being exposed to UV light. “Many patients are good at using sunscreen on their face, but don’t extend the same behavior to the rest of the body,” says Corey L. Hartman, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist and the founder of Skin Wellness Dermatology in Birmingham, Alabama. Why not stop at the chin? “There are instances where the face will look more youthful and even-toned, compared to the body—and oftentimes it comes down to a lack of sunscreen use on the body,” Dr. Hartman says. And supple, even skin is just one advantage of incorporating a body sunscreen into your regime. Applying SPF from head to toe also helps alleviate the risk of skin cancer.

Luckily, there’s no shortage of top-rated, dermatologist-approved sunscreens to choose from in the list below. But the best body sunscreen for you will be, quite simply, the one you’ll want to apply. Whether you like your SPF with a touch of shimmer, a classic clear finish, or a scent that channels piña coladas on the beach, prepare to meet the body sunscreen that will be your new sun care standby.

Rich in botanical oils (chardonnay grape seed, marula, passion fruit seed, jojoba, and shea), bisabolol, and vitamin E, this imparts a hydrating, non-greasy shine. Delivering a sun-kissed glisten without the greasy residue, this also smells of the brand’s tropical “Grand Cru ‘86” scent. “I love this lightweight oil because it leaves behind a luxurious velvet layer on the skin after application,” says Anay Kacharia, senior chemist at iLABS. “Its very distinct fragrance has become a favorite among consumers, evoking a nostalgic, uplifting experience upon application. This oil is suited for darker skin tones, oily skin types, and for people who generally sweat a little more.” Take the sun protection—and the general sensorial yumminess—a step further with the Vacation Chardonnay Lip Oil. Best for a Nourishing Glow: Kopari Sun Shield Body Glow SPF 50

Kopari Sun Shield Body Glow - SPF 50

  • Why We Love It: What’s more refreshing than a cooling gel on a hot summer day? Reach for Kopari’s formula when you want UV protection too; its gel is rich in restorative oils (macadamia, hibiscus, avocado, and coconut), vitamin E, and gold shimmer mica to improve skin’s hydration and radiance. The glittering concoction also has a scent made for poolside summer days (or for transporting you there when the weather is anything but summery). It smells of the brand’s signature, sweet-coconut-milk fragrance. Anetta Reszko, MD, PhD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City, signs off on the shining example of sun protection. “This is a luxurious sunscreen that combines broad-spectrum protection with a gorgeous, dewy finish,” she says.“Infused with nourishing coconut oil and aloe vera, it provides hydration while shielding your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Its lightweight, non-greasy formula leaves a subtle, glowing sheen, making it perfect for those who want sun protection with a radiant touch, especially for normal to dry skin types.” It’s also ideal for post-procedure skin. Darren Smith, MD, FACS, a board-certified plastic surgeon in New York City, says: “This contains macadamia oil, which helps to maintain scar moisture balance due to its hydrating and anti-inflammatory properties. Meanwhile, the hibiscus oil in this product contains alpha hydroxy acids and antioxidants that may minimize post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. These properties make it an excellent choice for those concerned about skin pigment changes after aesthetic procedures that utilize energy or heat to tighten skin, such as BodyTite or Morpheus8.”

Shiseido

Ultimate Sun Protector Lotion SPF 50+

  • Why We Love It: Planning for an active summer? Powered by its WetForce and HeatForce technology, Shiseido’s ocean-friendly, clear face and body blend manages to become more effective when met with water or warm temps, meaning it’s perfect for workouts or outdoor activities. Formerly an SPF 50 formula, the sunscreen has been updated with a new SPF level of 60, so tennis matches and pool days will be more protected than ever. “This is a product that my patients use quite a bit,” says Dr. Hartman. “Many like the formula that has a slight tint to even out skin tone across the body. The higher SPF level is beneficial if you plan to spend time outside all day, or will be in a higher elevation where the sun’s rays are stronger.” He adds that the formula is also ideal for someone with acne-prone or inflamed skin, as its licorice root has soothing properties.

Best for Sensitive Skin: Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen with Zinc Oxide SPF 50+

Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen with Zinc Oxide

  • Why We Love It: Those with sensitive skin should add Blue Lizard’s sunscreen to their beauty bag. Delivering mineral broad-spectrum SPF 50+, this expertly protects from 97% of the sun’s rays sans irritation. If that’s not enough, through a special dye that reacts to UV light, this cream changes colors to remind you to reapply sunscreen. Dara Spearman, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist in Fort Wayne, Indiana, is a fan of its high SPF level. “SPF 50+ is always a dermatologist favorite,” she says. What’s more, “Mineral sunscreen is great for sensitive skin, and for those with eczema or other inflammatory skin disease. The lack of chemicals means it is more tolerable for a broader range of skin types.” Her one piece of caution: From what she’s seen, this formula doesn’t blend as well as others into darker skin tones.

Bask

Non-Aerosol Invisible Mist Sunscreen Broad-Spectrum SPF 50

  • Why We Love It: “Sunscreen sprays are great for the body as they are easy to apply and reapply,” Dr. Hartman says. “The trick with a sunscreen spray is to spray it a few inches away from the skin and then rub it in with your hands to make sure the skin is covered properly.” He adds that Bask’s Non-Aerosol Invisible Mist Sunscreen is a nice option for all skin tones, as it doesn’t leave a white cast. “The continuous spray also helps ensure you don’t miss a spot,” he says. Board-certified dermatologist Blair Murphy Rose, MD, FAAD, is also a fan of the formula. “Bask’s Invisible Mist makes reapplication a breeze with its non-aerosol spray format that works at any angle—perfect for hard-to-reach spots,” she says. “It’s a chemical sunscreen with fragrance, so it may not be ideal for sensitive skin, but its fast-drying, residue-free finish works well for many. Everything You Need to Know

How often should you reapply body sunscreen?

“Sunscreen on the body should be reapplied every two hours, or immediately after swimming or sweating,” Dr. Hartman says. If you’re serious about sun protection, you may even want to set a timer until reapplication becomes a habit. “Reapplication is especially important to protect the skin, and I find that reapplication is often harder for patients than the initial sunscreen application,” Dr. Hartman notes.

What SPF number is the best for the body?

“I recommend a minimum SPF 30, broad-spectrum sunscreen,” Dr. Hartman says. “If you plan to be outdoors all day, a higher SPF— either 40 or 50—would be beneficial.”

Should you wear body sunscreen every day?

“It’s a good idea to wear body sunscreen every day, especially if you’re spending time outdoors or near windows with direct sunlight,” says Dr. Reszko. “UV rays can damage your skin even on cloudy or overcast days, and they can also penetrate through windows, which means you can still be exposed while inside. Daily sunscreen helps protect your skin from premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and the risk of skin cancer. If you’re mostly indoors but near a window or driving, applying sunscreen on areas like your arms, hands, and face is still beneficial.”
