The best serum foundations prove that flawless skin doesn’t require a heavy hand; these skin-care-infused formulas blur, perfect, and hydrate while delivering lightweight coverage that looks effortlessly natural. While the premise sounds simple enough, as a beauty writer, I’m frequently expounding their benefits: A serum foundation can do what a skin tint and tinted moisturizer can—and more.
“A formula is only truly a serum foundation if it is doing more than just feeling lightweight. It has to be built like skin care too,” Hourglass Cosmetics and Outside—In founder Carisa Janes details. “That means it should have that fluid, weightless, serum-like texture, but it also needs to include skin care ingredients at functional levels, not just a ‘marketing sprinkle.’ If the skin-care ingredients are not used in amounts that actually make a difference, it’s not truly efficacious—it’s just a foundation with a nice story.”
Vogue’s Favorite Serum Foundations
This thinking was the inspiration behind one of Janes’s latest debuts—a featherweight complexion savior that suspends weightless spherical powders within a liquid serum base, while sinking almost instantly into skin. These two characteristics, pro makeup artist Lauren D’Amelio Ventre adds, are central to the serum foundation equation. “It spreads like a serum and dries down for a skin-like finish rather than sitting on top like traditional foundation,” D’Amelio Ventre says.
By delivering a lightweight finish and natural radiance, celebrity makeup artist and Chanel ambassador Tasha Reiko Brown notes that serum-based foundations align perfectly with today’s skin-first beauty trend because they are “an easy way to achieve hyper-real skin while the serum part of the foundation helps support long-term skin-care benefits.” When applied correctly, these formulas deliver an exceptionally realistic complexion. “When you achieve a flawless base, the other aspects of your makeup take center stage and are free to draw focus,” she explains.

Everything You Need to Know
What is a serum foundation?
“A serum foundation has an ultra-fluid texture and is infused with skin-care ingredients like hyaluronic acid, squalane, or niacinamide,” Breitweiser explains. “The formula melts into skin, delivering hydration, radiance, and sheer coverage in one step.”
And while the many different types of complexion products may seem similar at first glance, serum foundations occupy their own category. “They’re thinner and more skin-like than lightweight foundations, yet offer more refinement and staying power than tints—all without feeling heavy,” she adds.
What types of looks can be achieved with a serum foundation?
“Serum foundations are ideal for modern, skin-centric makeup looks. They excel at no-makeup-makeup, clean beauty aesthetics, and fresh editorial skin,” says D’Amelio Ventre. While serum foundations work great for everyday makeup looks, Reiko Brown also loves them for photographed special occasions because of how the texture really settles into skin with a satin-like finish.“It’s coverage is as close to real skin as you could achieve,” she says. The key to ensuring your serum foundation looks it’s best is by applying it over a thin layer of hydration—nothing too emollient, otherwise, the formula will slip.
How to Apply a Serum Foundation
D’Amelio Ventre reminds us to always start with properly prepped skin, focusing on hydration rather than heavy primers. For Reiko Brown, she prefers to apply serum foundations with her fingertips, pressing the formula directly into skin. If you prefer a makeup brush, she recommends applying the foundation in the center of the face and sweeping it outward for a flawless, undetectable finish.
They both agree it’s best to build coverage intentionally, only where you need it, and to take a less-is-more approach to setting. D’Amelio Ventre recommends using a finely milled loose powder sparingly in high-oil or high-movement areas, and keeping the rest of the face fresh.
How We Tested
When we test and review a product, we take a holistic approach to deliver well-rounded product recommendations. First, we lean on Vogue’s vast network of experts—pro makeup artists, many of whom have celebrity clientele—to gain professional acumen on the industry’s standout products, ones these specialists would actually use on their clients. We pair their expertise with our editorial best practices to curate the thoughtful edits you read on our site.
As it relates to serum foundations, we selected the best based on the following characteristics: ingredients, texture, shade range, finish, longevity, and coverage. To do this, we paired our own personal tests of each formula with expert guidance and reviewer insights to determine which we would recommend to you.
