Super Bowl LVIII is upon us, and for some people, I assume the football game is the interesting part. I, on the other hand, am logging on solely to see what Taylor Swift is wearing (she made it! Duh, but yay!) and enjoy the year’s best collection of commercials. While 2023 featured ad cameos from the likes of Bennifer, Bradley Cooper, and Adam Driver, 2024 has already more than delivered on the celebrity factor. Below, find this year’s best Super Bowl commercials, from Michael Cera’s spot for Cerave, to Beyoncé’s epic Verizon ad.
David and Victoria Beckham for Uber Eats
David’s iconic rejoinder of “Be honest!” as his wife tried to play down her family’s wealth in Beckham has officially been memorialized in commercial history. This Uber Eats ad is a fun (if random) play on one of the year’s most genuinely funny memes.
Michael Cera for Cerave
Cera basically reprises his role as Alan in Barbie in this skincare commercial, and once again, it works (although his current facial hair situation is stressing me out a little bit).
Cetaphil’s Swiftie-inspired spot
Not to be outdone by Cerave, Cetaphil invoked the power of Swiftiedom in its own skincare ad. (Yes, it was cheesy, but yes, it made me cry.)
Judge Judy for e.l.f. Cosmetics
“Beauty fades, dumb is forever,” intones Judge Judy in this star-packed ad spot for e.l.f.’s cosmetics line, which also threw a bone to all the obsessive Suits rewatchers out there.
Martin Scorsese for Squarespace
Crime dramas, historical epics, sci-fi-inspired Super Bowl ads for Squarespace… Martin Scorsese can truly do it all!
Christopher Walken for BMW
Everyone is doing their best Walken impression in this honestly charming BMW commercial. Also, not to be weird, but I feel I must comment on how well he’s aging. Handsome alert!
Tina Fey for Booking.com
Tina Fey has been trending recently for deploying her trademark brutal wit on Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers’s podcast Las Culturistas, and the timing of this commercial (which depicts her as a blissed-out, unbothered vacation goddess) kind of rocks in that context.
Kate McKinnon for Hellmann’s Mayonnaise
Not only do I covet McKinnon’s white cable-knit sweater in this commercial, I also respect her familiarity with a talking, bow-tie-clad feline referred to only as “Mayo Cat.”
Arnold Schwarzenegger for State Farm
Schwarzenegger returns to his action-hero days in this insurance ad, playing on his signature accent and intonation much like Christopher Walken in his BMW ad.
Aubrey Plaza for Mountain Dew
My enduring crush on Plaza (which certainly wasn’t undercut by her performance as a hot, semi-mean ex in Happiest Season) is being directly catered to with this ad, in which the actor sardonically refers to herself as “America’s sweetheart.”
Laura Dern, Jennifer Hudson, Bradley Cooper (and his mom!), and many, many more for T-Mobile
If you’re looking for a maximum density of celebrities per commercial, this pack-’em-all-in T-Mobile ad is definitely the one for you.
Bennifer for Dunkin’
Ben Affleck is basically carrying the Dunkin’ franchise on his back right now, and for this year’s Super Bowl ad he enlisted some help from a few very special sources: Jack Harlow, Matt Damon, and one Jennifer Lynn Affleck, who kind of steals the show?
Jenna Ortega for Doritos
There’s a mystery theme going on in this ad that suits Ortega, famously the star of Wednesday. (I can’t fault her taste in chips, either.)
Scarlett Johansson for M&Ms
Wait, does ScarJo not have an Oscar? And did I just learn that via an M&Ms commercial?
Beyoncé for Verizon
How did Verizon get her to do this? And whose brilliant idea was it to cast Tony Hale as her co-star? Anyway, stream “16 Carriages” and “Texas Hold ’Em” now!
