Truth is, the best drugstore mascara can be just as effective as its more expensive counterparts. Celebrity makeup artist Amrita Mehta emphasizes that the quality of mascaras boils down to compatibility rather than price. In today’s beauty landscape, drugstore brands invest significant effort into formulating diverse mascaras tailored to different lash types. While luxury mascaras may boast premium ingredients, their superiority over drugstore versions depends on individual preferences and effectiveness. Additionally, considering the short shelf life of mascaras (two to four months), it’s essential to find one that complements your lashes, regardless of its price point. “While excellent mascaras can be found at both luxury retailers and drugstores, when it comes down to it, the best mascara is the one that suits your lashes, and truly works with them to enhance rather than against them,” she says. What to Look for in a Drugstore Mascara
We’ve all been there: you walk into your local drugstore, make a beeline for makeup section, and are confronted with a great big wall of mascara options. Cue the decision overload! When looking for the best drugstore mascara, keep in mind the benefits you’re after, your preferred wand shape, and whether or not you desire a waterproof formula. Pro-makeup artists get into each of these features to help inform your choice, below.
- Benefits: It is entirely up to you whether you prefer volume, length, or boldness. The key benefit, celebrity makeup artist Saischa Beechman explains, is to look for mascaras that don’t break down easily. “Look for keywords like non-flaking, non-smudging, and long wear to get the best all-day results.” She also recommends looking for tubing and fiber mascaras—“they are incredible to remove, and have wildly buildable intensity. Your lashes will hit the ceiling!”
- Wand Shape: Brownell believes the mascara wand is just as important as the formula itself. “If you want to lengthen and separate your lashes for an extension effect, go for a skinnier wand. A bigger, dense bristle wand will pick up [more product in one application] and give your lashes major volume. A curved mascara wand will deposit most of the product to the outer and inner lashes and accentuate a curl, opening up your eyes,” he explains. Meanwhile, Beechman prefers a tapered wand to reach inner corner and bottom lashes, or a thick wand for “juicy” lashes.
- Waterproof: To use waterproof or not to use waterproof is the question. The pros agree: though it’s not necessary for daily use, you certainly can use waterproof if you want to. Professional makeup artist Sean Harris explains that waterproof lashes will give you the longest wear time without smudging, and are better at holding a curl. Professional makeup artist and groomer Brittany Whitfield adds that applying waterproof mascara to the bottom lashes is a must for her to avoid product slip. (Keep in mind that non-waterproof mascaras are much easier to remove, while the incorrect removal of waterproof mascara can dry and damage lashes.) Beecham reminds us of the importance of using an oil cleanser to remove waterproof mascara safely. “Use oil-based eye makeup removers isolated to the eye area, and gently rub until the product is broken down,” she explains.
