Though I’m careful to avoid mechanical damage while drying and styling, a few tiny hairs inevitably spring up after a blowout—hovering at my crown like static come to life. And updos? Another struggle entirely. Unlike my colleague and dear friend Molly Barstein, slicked-back styles have never been my strong suit—even after a step-by-step tutorial in her bathroom. She is known for her perfectly coiffed buns; my baby hairs, on the other hand, refuse to fall in line.

Despite my best efforts, my flyaways have an agenda of their own. Over the years, I’ve come to resist the pressure to look polished for hours and let the wispy little pieces do as they wish. That is until I discovered the best flyaway wands, which make taming rogue baby hairs feel less like a battle and more like a finishing touch.

“Flyaway wands deposit a very small amount of lightweight hold exactly where you need it, usually along the hairline, part, and crown where short hairs stick up,” Aaron Grenia, professional hairstylist and cofounder of IGK Hair Care, tells Vogue. “The mascara-style brush smooths those pieces down while the formula keeps them in place without making the hair stiff or greasy.”

Before flyaway wands, the pros implemented all sorts of methods to conceal them in plain sight—especially during fashion shows and photo shoots and while getting celebrity clients red-carpet ready. “We used a lot of backstage tricks [to tame flyaways], like hairspray on a toothbrush, clear brow gel, even a touch of hand cream in emergencies,” Grenia says. “These methods worked, but they weren’t always clean or consistent. Dedicated flyaway wands basically give that same precision in a much easier, more refined way.” Ahead, everything you need to know about using—and choosing—the best flyaway hair wands to smooth unwanted stray hairs in seconds.

Everything You Need to Know

What’s the difference between a flyaway wand and hair gel?

Don’t assume that flyaway wands are just hair gels in a mascara tube—Grenia explains there are key formula differences too. “It’s really about polishing the finish, not freezing the style. When it dries, you won’t notice a white residue like some hair gels,” he says.

Grenia explains that most flyaway wand formulas tend to hold for a few hours while remaining flexible, because humidity and movement can cause stray hairs to reemerge. “That’s why it’s nice to keep one in your bag; it’s an easy, quick touch-up without having to redo your whole style,” he adds.

How to Use a Flyaway Wand

How to use a flyaway wand feels obvious: Twist open the cap and gently swipe the applicator where needed.“The most important tip is to use very little product and just lightly skim the surface of the hair,” he says Grenia. He explains that you should also slightly switch up your approach, depending on the hairstyle you’re going for. Below, he breaks it down:

  • Hair-Down Styles: Once your hair is styled—whether that be curls, a bouncy blowout, or pin straight—assess where you see stray hairs boinking out and treat your flyaway wand as the finishing touch. “Focus only on the areas catching the light hairline, part, and top layer,” he says.
  • Slicked Styles: Half-up or fully slicked-back buns and ponytails can take a much more generous approach when using a flyaway wand. “You can apply a bit more and use the wand almost like a detailing tool to guide direction,” Grenia says.

What hairstyles can be achieved with flyaway wands?

The sky is the limit when it comes to using flyaway wands. “They’re great for sleek ponytails and buns, smooth blowouts, braids, updos, and even natural textures when you just want control at the hairline without losing movement,” says Grenia. These products, he explains, act as a finishing touch that makes hairstyles look camera-ready and polished in real life. So yes, you can set down the blurring tool in your photo-editing app.
