Come October, New Yorkers looking to escape the city for a long weekend trade the coastal enclaves of the Hamptons for the golden hiking trails and quaint little towns of Upstate New York—and nowhere is this mass exodus more visible than in the Catskills. This mountainous region of the Hudson Valley is no more than three hours from Manhattan with quite the idyllic reputation, and for good reason. Farm-to-table eateries prioritizing local, seasonal produce reign supreme; there are entire stretches of road with zero cell service; and in the world of hospitality, the area is brimming with stylish hotels.
Vogue’s Guide to the Best Hotels in the Catskills:
- For a Minimalist Dream: Inness
- For Indoor-Outdoor Living: Wildflower Farms
- For Access to the Slopes: Scribner’s Catskill Lodge
- For Luxury Amenities: Eastwind Hotel
- For an Intimate B&B: Hotel Lilien
- For Rustic Design Inspiration: The Henson
To that end, the best hotels in the Catskills cover a lot of ground. Modern interpretations of inns layer rustic charm with contemporary finishes. Rugged lodges perched on sprawling acres of land offer up hiking and biking aplenty. Boutique bed and breakfasts make you feel right at home from the very first morning matcha (we’re talking about New Yorkers, after all). It all depends on the sort of upstate trip that suits your itinerary; ahead, 10 of the very best stays in the area.
Inness
Choose from one of 28 cabins or stay in the 12-room Farmhouse; either way, a stay at Inness is sure to help you tap in to the exact strain of pared-back luxury the property has made its signature since it opened in 2021. Think: cream-colored rooms with soaring ceilings, dotted with vintage furniture and outfitted with linens from Frette and toiletries from Aesop for the perfect blend of country and modern. Outside, two saltwater pools, a golf course, and a tennis court offer plenty to do for the traveler whose idea of vacation involves an activity-packed itinerary. Or, keep things low-key with a night in at the hotel’s restaurant, which serves up a varied menu of everything from salted sticky toffee pudding to wood-roasted squash to a good old fashioned cheeseburger.
“We rented a car and drove up to Inness for a long weekend in April, 2024,” Vogue’s associate shopping director Talia Abbas says. “It rained most of the time, which meant we couldn’t enjoy the outside as much, still, the property was beautiful and our room quaint and intimate; we stayed at Farmhouse, which had a screened-in porch where you could while away the liminal hours in between lunch and dinner.” As for her favorite thing on the dinner menu? “I still think about their Basque cheesecake… I will be back!”
- Amenities: Two swimming pools, golf course, tennis courts, on-site restaurant, spa, gym
- Address: 10 Bank St, Accord, NY 12404
Callicoon Hills
Spread across 23 acres on the foothills of the Catskill Mountains, this is the spot to go if you’re planning a trip upstate that revolves around being outdoors. Hiking, mountain biking, showshoeing… the area has it all, and the staff can help you organize your dream itinerary. The property itself reflects these rustic activities: Some of the 65 available rooms are A-frame cabins, for an elevated “camping” experience. The Conover Club, Callicoon Hills’s on-site restaurant, is a must for comfort food and a craft cocktail (or two); for lighter fare, start your day off at the Rise Shine coffee house. There, you’ll find coffee and bagels sourced from local partners, for a true taste of the region.
- Amenities: Indoor-outdoor gym, swimming pool, sauna, yoga deck, complimentary s’mores, on-site restaurant and bar, coffee shop, resort passes available
- Address: 1 Hill Resort Road, Callicoon Center, New York 12724
Hotel Lilien
The best way to describe Hotel Lilien is this: It’s sort of a condensed version of the house from Clue, with a far more elevated design scheme and far fewer murder weapons on the loose. Downstairs, a library, a dining room, and a billiard room (which also serves as a sprawling lounge, eating area, and performance space for the local DJ who comes on Saturdays) offer several options for communal living. Snag a table for dinner in—the fried chicken sandwich deserves its own ballad—and spend the evening sipping seasonal cocktails by the fireplace.
This boutique hotel is also the ideal setting for larger gatherings (Vogue’s fashion market director Naomi Elizée recently hosted her welcome party here!). The Lodge, an all-season event space that includes a two-story great room and landscaped meadow, just opened on the property in September 2025—an idyllic spot to celebrate just about anything, with direct access to Hotel Lilien via a wooded path.
- Amenities: Swimming pool, on-site restaurant and bar, complimentary breakfast, fire pit, live DJ, library, billiards table
- Address: 6629 Route 23A, Tannersville, NY 12485
Piaule Catskill
For a stylistic palate cleanser, book a stay at Piaule. Just two hours away from Manhattan by car (and easily accessible from the city for non-drivers too, via Amtrak) sits a 24-room Japanese- and Scandinavian-inspired retreat that’s a far cry from the rustic cottage look that’s mostly pervasive in this part of the state. Everything about it, from the stripped-down interiors to the emphasis on indoor-outdoor living, encourages you to unwind and unplug—in some cases literally, as there are no televisions on the property. Guests stay in private cabins completely ensconced by the surrounding forest, taking breaks only to hike over to the spa for a plunge in the heated mineral pool.
- Amenities: On-site restaurant, EV chargers, spa, swimming pool, retail corner
- Address: 333 Mossy Hill Road, Catskill, NY 12414
The Henson
One of the newer openings in the Catskills as of 2024, The Henson has already established itself as a haven for a certain kind of elegant New Yorker: One driven by style (a moody palette of earth tones sets the scene for the three-story inn) and by booking the hottest dinner reservation in town (the fine dining restaurant, Matilda, is one worth traveling for). Each of the 16 guest rooms is equipped for luxury, with features like Grown Alchemist bath products and Frette towels, and the blooming gardens below are perfect for a stroll or for setting up shop in the afternoons with a book.
And as for the shared spaces? Those in search of the community feel of a typical bed breakfast will want to spend most of their time in the living room. The cozy, fire-lit space is stocked with board games and books for the perfect post-dinner gathering.
- Amenities: Sauna, gardens, on-site restaurant, private dining available, complimentary breakfast
- Address: 39 Goshen Road, Hensonville, NY 12439
Scribner’s Catskill Lodge
A true Catskills lodge, Scribner»s makes for a nice visit all year round—but it truly comes alive in the colder months (it is right near Hunter Mountain, after all; a prime location for hikers and skiers). It’s a massive property with something for every kind of traveler, whether you stay in the 38-room Lodge or opt for one of the 11 luxury cabins for a bit more seclusion. There are several common areas scattered throughout, from a library that opens up to a sprawling outdoor deck to a cozy lounge that encourages visitors with a coffee and tea station for endless refills of your warm beverage of choice. Prospect, the property’s on-site restaurant and bar, has such a loyal fan base that you need to book a reservation for dinner even if you’re staying at the hotel to ensure your slot alongside those who travel specifically for the food. (And you definitely should: The burger, which comes with a thick layer of truffle mayonnaise and bacon marmalade, is decadent enough to merit a booking on its own.)
- Amenities: Library, swimming pool, sauna, seasonal ice rink, studio space for yoga and meditation, gardens, on-site restaurant and bar, gift shop
- Address: 13 Scribner Hollow Rd, Hunter, NY 12442
Wildflower Farms, Auberge Collection
Sandwiched between the Shawangunk Ridge and rolling meadows of wildflowers, this aptly named place is just under two hours out of New York City—an ideal escape for the busy cosmopolitan who quite literally needs to touch grass. Wildflower Farms is a sprawling estate of 65 freestanding cabins and cottages, with common areas, like a massive open-air porch, peppered throughout for plenty of room to stretch out in. Vaulted ceilings and floor-to-top windows make the most of the stunning views; and with amenities like outdoor showers, balconies, and fire pits available, you’re encouraged to capitalize on time spent outside. “Crisp yet sunny, the November weather was immaculate when I stayed here, which meant I got to indulge in all the property had to offer: hiking, morning yoga, a ceramics class, and swimming in the outdoor heated pool,” says Abbas. “The daily ritual of collecting fresh eggs from the chicken coop for the hotel chef to prepare as breakfast was a simple joy and a cherished memory!”
- Amenities: Spa, on-site restaurant and bar, swimming pool, tennis courts, fitness studio
- Address: 2702 Main Street, Gardiner NY 12525
Eastwind Oliverea Valley
Mid-century meets Scandinavian in this mountainside spot, which was updated this year to include an all-season pool. The amenities list is long: a heated pool, a cold plunge, a glass-walled yoga studio, an infrared light room, and not one but two Scandinavian-style standalone saunas. Eastwind’s on-site restaurant, Dandelion, follows a “forage to fork” mentality that highlights seasonal eating—spend an evening here for ramp pesto tagliatelle or brick chicken with a Sichuan jus, all washed down with a rotating menu of craft cocktails.
- Amenities: Heated pool, cold plunge bucket, fitness studio, infrared lightroom, on-site restaurant and bar, two Scandinavian saunas, complimentary s’mores, hammocks, complimentary bike rental, Hunter rain boots available for rent
- Address: 212 McKenley Hollow Road, Big Indian, NY 12410
Woodstock Way
The town of Woodstock, tucked into the southern Catskill Mountains, is ideal if your dream Upstate New York getaway involves a charming little village; and if you want a hotel that puts you near enough to the center of it all, this option is the way to go. Located near a waterfall amongst leafy trees, it harnesses the feeling of a grown-up treehouse: Venture out to explore scenic trails along the Ashokan Resevoir and Kaaterskill Falls, or stay in with a good read (and an appointment with the in-room masseuse).
There’s no on-site restaurant—though a few of the suites feature full kitchens for family or longer stays—but since you’ll be within walking distance of the town, you won’t miss this feature. “It feels like an elevated cabin retreat,” explains Andrea Zendejas, commerce market editor. “Roll out of bed for a latte and morning bun at Bread Alone or head over to Silvia for a delicious local dinner.”
- Amenities: Private yoga and massages, coffee station in the communal lobby
- Address: 10 Waterfall Way, Woodstock, New York 12498
The Chatwal Lodge
A true old-school lodge right down to the wood-beamed ceiling and tartan quilts, this 14-room hotel is surrounded by hiking trails and a lake. It’s situated on 18,000 acres of a former wildlife reserve in the southwestern Catskills, in a fairly remote location you’ll love if you seek true tranquility for your jaunt upstate. Most of the suites follow the design blueprint of an upscale log cabin, replete with stone fireplaces, wood paneling, and the occasional claw-foot tub. If that’s too rustic for you, consider splashing out on one of the three Treehouses: 1,300-square-foot suites that float high up in the trees and feature a more modern, sleek aesthetic.
Another unique feature—the Chatwal Lodge is an all-inclusive stay. Go all in on activities around the reserve, and dine in at the Rustic Grill for some comfort food.
- Amenities: All-inclusive meals, on-site restaurant and bar, afternoon tea, gym, screening room, bike and fishing equipment available to rent, complimentary s’mores, private massages
- Address: 338 Chapin Trail, White Lake, NY 12786
