When winds are whipping and grey clouds are threatening, heading indoors—and staying there—leads to another annual occurrence: peak cuffing season. The opportunity to court and be courted (apparently) spikes in the winter, and with hot toddies, cozy sweaters, and gorgeous candles aflame, we understand why. Yet, despite the need to burrow, New Yorkers tend to get a little stir-crazy when holed up in our apartments for longer than a day. Enter: romantic weekend getaways from NYC.
Whether your fling is fresh off the ground or you’ve been together for 30 years, there’s no better time than winter to head out of town for a weekend of quality time (even if you spend the evenings watching Netflix). Below, we’ve rounded up 15 of the best hotels within three hours of New York City for a perfect, luxurious winter weekend getaway.
Wildflower Farms, Auberge Resorts Collection, Gardiner, NY
One of the buzziest new additions to the Auberge Resorts Collection, Wildflower Farms has undoubtedly popped up on your feed already, with its expansive outdoor great room looking out toward unparalleled views of the Shawangunk Ridge, centered around a vast circular hearth. (Swoon.) With striking rustic country vistas and cozy fireplaces lit around every corner, this hotel is one of the best new offerings to open outside of New York in years, and is perfect for a dead-of-winter retreat.
Located just 90 minutes from NYC and set on 140 Arcadian acres in the Hudson Valley, nature is the guiding force behind every stay at this unique and visually stunning hotel. With 65 bespoke cabin accommodations with interiors by Ward + Gray and architecture by Electric Bowery, the upstate-industrial vibe of the property is as extraordinary as its exterior views. Staying at Wildflower feels like being transported to an otherworldly, slower pace—far from the hustle and bustle of NYC. (We likened it to a friend as “staying on the chicest commune.”) But the culinary and wellness programming is just as stand out as the atmosphere and interiors; Clay, Wildflower’s on-site restaurant, offers exceptionally delicious seasonal fare with a decidedly elevated vibe and a buzzy bar (as well as the must-have cinnamon bun at breakfast, which is practically a requirement in our book).
Thistle, the on-property spa, offers not only exceptional treatments grounded in a sense of place, but also one of the best massages we’ve ever had. (We went back two days in a row, it was that good.) With its namesake farm, on-site orchards, excellent dining options with menus focused on farm-to-table offerings—plus a myriad of relaxing treatments and wellness programming (think: sound baths and breathwork workshops)—Wildflower has endless opportunities for connection and relaxation. The itinerary here is always evolving, so head to their experiences section to see what’s currently on offer.
The Mayflower Inn Spa, Auberge Resorts Collection, Washington, Connecticut
The Mayflower Inn Spa has long been the chic New Yorker’s R&R destination of choice: You’ll often find AD veteran Jane Keltner de Valle or former Vogue Met Gala wizard Sylvana Ward-Durrett on its grounds—and with good reason. The Mayflower Inn Spa, a beloved jewel of The Auberge Resorts Collection, is a design lover’s dream. Helmed by AD 100 designer Celerie Kemble of Kemble Interiors, the entire property was recently overhauled from top to bottom, turning an already beloved hotel into a weekend destination with a veritable who’s who of names on the check-in list.
Located in the idyllic town of Washington Connecticut, the country retreat is nestled on 58 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens and woodland. A weekend here feels like a stay at your chicest friend’s most luxuriously appointed country house, each thoughtful gesture of hospitality peppered with a clever sense of humor, from the house-spun caramels left by your bedside with a cheeky hand-written note, to the never-ending list of excellent programming on offer at the property. Perfectly decorated with a healthy dose of kitsch, the Inn is Kemble and Auberge’s love letter to Litchfield County.
Less than a two-hour drive from New York City, the 30-room luxury hotel does not skimp on the details, from the immaculate turndown service to the excellent culinary program led by Executive Chef Luke Dowdy. (Tip: Do get the room-service burger in bed, and pair it with the sommelier’s recommended glass of red wine.) Also not to miss: Brunch in The Garden Room, one of the prettiest, perfectly trellised spaces on the property.
Surrounded by 3,000 acres of nature preserve, the property’s crown jewel is its entirely renovated 20,000-square-foot legendary spa, aptly titled The Retreat—bringing an innovative approach to wellbeing at one of New England’s most exquisite country escapes. With an unending list of transformative bodywork, advanced skin therapies, expert-led health coaching, immersive programming, and seasonal retreats designed to nurture the body and mind to choose from, there’s no shortage of relaxation at The Mayflower Inn Spa. The craniosacral massage is worth a try—we promise. You can explore the full list of Retreat experiences here.
And if you happen to be heading up for Valentine’s Day, couples can enjoy a special three-course prix-fixe menu featuring hyper-local and seasonal ingredients alongside live music. Also not to miss: the outdoor panoramic cedar sauna, particularly stunning with a dusting of snow outside—an excellent start or finish to a day of spa treatments.
And if you happen to be heading up for Valentine’s Day, couples can enjoy a special custom-curated private dining experience in the Inn’s incredibly cozy and charming library. Also not to miss: the outdoor panoramic cedar sauna, particularly stunning with a dusting of snow outside—an excellent start or finish to a day of spa treatments.
If the itch to explore strikes, downhill enthusiasts should try the 23 slopes of nearby Mohawk Mountain; lessons for both experts and beginners are available. Additionally, the nearby Woodbury Ski Area offers excellent tubing and cross-country skiing. And if you’re looking for a more mellow activity, the hotel’s surrounding area, Litchfield Hills, is known as “America’s antiquing capital.” We recommend checking out New Preston and heading into Plain Goods, Privet House, and Pergola for some perfectly curated shopping, and DK Schulman for home goods and adorable gifts for kids to bring home.
The Vanderbilt, Auberge Resorts Collection, Newport, Rhode Island
The team at Auberge has perfected the long weekend getaway experience, and The Vanderbilt, located in a historic downtown mansion once owned by the iconic American family in Newport, RI, knows exactly how to do it right. Voted the number one hotel in the Northeast by Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards in 2023, the recently renovated and reopened hotel gets cozy down pat in the wintertime. With a secret bar tucked into a corner of the luxe and inviting Doris Day-inspired parlor, to the crackling fireplaces lit in almost every room, the chilly months at the mansion are not to be missed.
Whether imbibing in the moody lacquered navy dining room or taking afternoon tea in the airy and sun-dappled conservatory, the hotel has plenty of gorgeously appointed spaces to relax, unwind, and take in a languid meal.
And while you’re there, allow the hotel concierge to arrange a tour of the Gilded Age mansions (The Breakers and Rosecliff are not to be missed if you fancy yourself an interiors or architecture buff), before or after a ride along Ocean Drive with gorgeous views of the Atlantic. If it’s not too chilly, an excursion to Cliff Walk, an iconic 3.5-mile stretch of scenery in Newport, is a great way to get in some quality time. If you’re looking to stay local and leisurely, all the shops are within walking distance of the Vanderbilt on the charming cobblestone streets of Newport’s historic district. And with a few excellent wineries and breweries in the area, a tasting can fill up any late afternoons you might find open. If wellness is on your travel tick list, the hotel can coordinate private yoga and meditation sessions, or if the goal is to kick back and relax, their newly opened whisky tasting room with Macallan is as cozy as can be. Don’t miss: afternoon tea in the sun-dappled conservancy.
Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach
As Palm Beach’s only five-star, five-diamond luxury resort, located on a private stretch of the island’s most beautiful beach, the Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach is a gem for a romantic winter weekend getaway. A quick flight from the East Coast (under three hours!) brings you steps from the soft sand, sparkling pools, and excellent Michelin-rated fine dining on property. The boutique retreat feels romantic and secluded, with one of the most beautiful views of the ocean from the pool—yet the property keeps you close to the Palm Beach lifestyle, with just a short 15-minute drive to Worth Avenue’s shopping and dining. From poolside cocktails and a daily gelato cart in the afternoons to attentive five-star service honed over 30 years with the signature Four Seasons approach to luxury, every detail is designed for an elegant escape from the moment you walk into the elevated Martin Brudnizki-designed interiors.
On the private beach, dive into a good book and indulge in the day’s signature cocktail—or, if you’re feeling more adventurous, sign up for water sports ranging from paddleboarding to kayaking to boogie boards. If you want to venture further, the resort’s concierge can plan the perfect day on the water where you can snorkel, fish, or sail into a stunning sunset, or they can arrange a day of shopping and dining with transportation. (We recommend antiquing on South Dixie and Georgia Ave if that’s your thing.) If looking for some golf and tennis action, slip away from the sand to the property’s 18-hole putting green, complete with outdoor table tennis and billiards, or head to their Tennis Center—home to brand-new pickleball, bocce, and basketball courts, all perfect for sharpening your game with a little romantic competition. Or if you’re in the mood to just veg, book a massage or facial at the elegant in-house spa.
With charming MOKEs available on site for hotel guests, offering a unique and sustainable way to traverse the island’s landscapes, you can get around Palm Beach in style—whether stopping at the beach with the property’s (excellent!) house-made pizza in tow, trying a sweet treat at Royal Poinciana Plaza in the heart of town, or exploring the boutiques of Worth Avenue, each ride promises a journey through the heart of Palm Beach Island.
Ocean House, Watch Hill, Rhode Island
Situated directly on the gorgeous beaches of Watch Hill, Rhode Island, Ocean House is a legendary New England resort dating back to 1868, with accolades that speak for themselves. As the first and only AAA Five Diamond and Forbes Five Star hotel in the state, the property’s Ocean Harvest Spa and Coast restaurant were also awarded Forbes Five Star Ratings, making it one of only 13 resorts in the world with triple Five Star Resort status. And the praise is well earned: the property is stunning; the massages are exquisite—the spa’s relaxation room is a rotunda overlooking the ocean (does it get better than that?)—and the food is divine. The hotel has also quickly risen to become one of the most coveted wedding destinations on the East Coast; its trademark cheery yellow facade and beachfront real estate lend themselves to particularly stunning photos.
The room accommodations are sophisticated and cozy, with a blue and white palette and luxe additions, like soaking tubs overlooking the water (and Taylor Swift’s house), and the hotel’s luxury concierge and activity offerings are unparalleled—if you have any inkling of an activity you’d like to do, even if it’s not on the menu, they can figure it out and make it happen. But if you simply want to sit in the lobby and sip on a hot toddy by the fire, fiddle with a puzzle in one of the gigantic armchairs, and take in the mellow sounds of Bobby Darin tunes played lightly on the piano by a live jazz musician, you can do that too. (We know from personal experience.)
The Dunlin, Auberge Collection, Johns Island, SC
A quick (under two hours!) flight from NYC, the beauty of Charleston and its surrounding area awaits for a transportive, romantic getaway. Journey just 20 miles from Charleston proper to Johns Island and the banks of the Kiawah River—the coastal home of The Dunlin, named after the beautiful local shorebird. The Dunlin’s 72 guest rooms—each of which comes complete with furnished screen porches, perfect for enjoying morning coffee or getting lost in a book while listening to the river—are designed to highlight the charm of Southern living, with inviting, whimsical interiors by acclaimed designer Amanda Lindroth. Every suite is equipped with fireplaces and separate sitting rooms for cozy winter days on the coast.
The property welcomes guests with a peaceful, cottage-inspired aesthetic, featuring preppy meets sophisticated spaces crafted with a wink. With house bikes, paddleboard and kayak rentals, tennis and pickleball, fishing, beach gear and passes, a resort pool and hot tub with cabanas (plus daily s’mores from 7 to 9 p.m.)—not to mention the bevy of planned experiences on-property—there’s no lack of activities for guests, no matter the time of year.
For those visiting in winter, the property is hosting its signature event for 2026 over President’s Day Weekend, The Seafarer’s Table, which celebrates the best of the Lowcountry culinary scene and lifestyle. For couples looking to celebrate the holiday, there will also be a Valentine’s version of The Dunlin’s popular mixology class, Southern Sips, a curated shopping experience with Miron Crosby and Onward Reserve, a make-your-own blooms bar, and more. (You can find the full itinerary here.) And if you visit outside of cupid’s weekend, you can still catch some romanc—every Saturday and Sunday through the end of February, The Dunlin will offer up an Afternoon Tea experience, curated by the tabletop tastemaker Mrs. Alice.
Other wintertime activities include a visit to the on-property spa, Aster, for a signature Biologique Recherche facial or the crowd-pleasing Healing Honey Body treatment. And if you’re looking to venture off property, there’s ample nature-watching: Backwoods Safaris and Coastal Safaris offer guided tours of the hotel’s marshlands and lowcountry natural surroundings. With mahjong classes and bike rides along the marsh with a visit to the farm stand, there’s something for every type of guest. A full set of itineraries for winter can be found here.
Whether feeding friendly goats at the farm, birdwatching on the tidal flats, casting a line to hook local game fish, or paddling on the water alongside dolphins and sea turtles, this is where to come when you re seeking to reconnect with nature—and when New York is frozen solid, hopping on a quick plane ride to more temperate climes is always a good idea.
Glenmere Mansion, Hudson Valley, New York
Originally fashioned as a 35-room Tuscan villa for a financier in 1911, Glenmere Mansion underwent a painstaking restoration to return to its original beauty. Situated in New York’s Hudson Valley, the elegantly appointed boutique hotel is approximately two hours from the city but feels like a world away once you drive up its long, stately entrance. Upon arriving, guests are greeted with cocktails, homemade cookies, and a handwritten welcome note; the fireplace in your room will also most likely be ablaze. Sumptuous terry robes hang in elegant white-marble bathrooms with antique Portuguese blue and white sinks, and claw-footed tubs beckon. The interiors of the space are visually stunning: Original architectural details were preserved throughout, and the interior design by Palm Beach designer Scott Snyder is timeless and ultra-sophisticated. The landscape offers panoramic views of the surrounding hills and tranquil Glenmere Lake, but what you really come here for is the spa: It’s one of only a handful of true Turkish Carrara marble bathhouses and hammams in the United States, and the experience is unparalleled.
The hammam routine involves mixed use of the herbal steam room, dry heat sauna, stimulating Swiss shower, cool mist room, aqua massage vitality pool, and a warm marble belly stone; not to mention a vigorous body scrub followed by a purifying cleanse and 60- or 90-minute massage. Couples treatments here are not to be missed; a lavish duet suite boasts side-by-side soaking tubs and treatment tables. Plus, each ritual in the spa includes pre- or post-treatment tapas and a selection of organic teas, juices, or water infusions in their stunning Relaxation Library, complete with a fireplace and myriad books to get lost in. Walking back to the main property from the spa you’ll set foot through a gorgeous preserved orangery, with beautiful terracotta flooring and plants flourishing indoors, basking in the winter’s sunlight, and feel instantly transported back to the Gilded Age mansions of New York’s past. The gym on site has everything needed for a couples’ sweat session, and private yoga and meditation courses are available upon request.
The dining experience has also recently been overhauled at Glenmere and the food is absolutely exceptional. There are two dining options onsite – one a casual tavern, and one more formal, in a deliciously appointed chocolate brown dining room. With breakfast included, the pastries are not to be missed – served on stunning blue and white china in the formal dining room, there’s no need to leave to explore local restaurants. But if you’re curious, consider heading over to Brotherhood Winery, the oldest vineyard in America, for a wine tasting or tour. The Dia:Beacon art museum and Storm King Art Center are also only a quick ride away, as are the antiquing towns of Warwick and Sugar Loaf. Plus, Woodbury Common, one of the largest luxury retail outlets in the country, is a stone’s throw away, if it piques your interest. Our personal favorite activity? Having a drink in front of the roaring fire in the hotel’s game room, reading the exceptional collection of vintage design books and playing Scrabble.
Shou Sugi Ban House, Water Mill, NY
Nestled in the quiet Hamptons hamlet of Water Mill, this wabi-sabi-inspired center for body treatments, healing arts, nutrition, and fitness serves as the ideal retreat for couples looking to escape the bustle of city life and reconnect in a serene spa setting. At Shou Sugi, those looking for a romantic and relaxing bonding experience can indulge in therapeutic massages, body rituals, and facials that draw on the healing powers of the ocean, pine forests, and indigenous herbs, or explore 1:1 nutrition courses, movement classes, and healing arts (think: reiki, acupuncture, and more) with a holistic, personalized approach. With its minimalist architecture, peaceful gardens, and highly curated spa experiences, Shou Sugi Ban House creates a deeply rejuvenating environment where visitors can recharge in a luxurious setting—with excellent food to boot.
Couples looking to kick off the New Year refreshed can take advantage of Shou Sugi’s transformative Balanced Body Series, as well as seasonal stay offers including the “No Reason to Leave” package, which provides guests who book up to three nights a $270 wellness credit to be used at the spa (applicable now through January 1) or the “Winter Escape” package, which allows guests who book two nights to get their third night free (applicable now through March 31). And while you’re out east, be sure to check out local culture at the Parrish Art Museum, try out a wine tasting at the beloved Wolffer Estate Vineyards, indulge in a brisk walk at Cooper’s Beach or Flying Point Beach, or a hike through Mashomack Preserve–some art, wine, and time outside does the body good.
Castle Hill Inn, Newport, Rhode Island
The first Rhode Island hotel to be invited to join the prestigious Relais Chateaux hotel group, in 2008, Castle Hill Inn is a luxurious seaside escape steeped in rich New England history. A stunning waterfront town, Newport has played vacation home to everyone from Grace Kelly (her favorite private beach is actually on Castle Hill’s premises; she used to frequent it while filming High Society) to Taylor Swift, and with good reason: Its classic elegance mixed with beach-town charm draws you right in from the start.
Castle Hill’s unique layout includes an original 19th-century mansion that offers seven guest rooms, as well as recently constructed bungalows hidden away on the beach for a more private feel. Stay in one of 33 upscale rooms or beach cottages while enjoying complimentary breakfast and afternoon tea as well as private beach access, and be sure to ask for a room with a gas fireplace and heated floors.
Don’t pass up a couples massage in the hotel’s signature spa, The Retreat, complete with local products from Rhode Island-based natural skincare company Farmaesthetics, and make sure to dine in one (or both) of the hotel’s restaurants: The food is impeccable. With board games and hot toddies offered next to the lobby’s wood-burning fireplace, you might never want to leave, but if you get the itch, ice skating at Bowen’s Wharf is a fun and wintry experience worth having. Top it off with some hot chocolate and lunch harborside at The Mooring, or have a romantic Italian dinner for two at local spot Mamma Luisa (a personal favorite!) Just note: the property is closed for the month of January to accommodate its annual winter refresh, but it opens up right in time for February—and Valentine’s Day.
Eau Palm Beach Resort and Spa
Just a short escape from the city (an easy, under-three-hour flight!) Eau Palm Beach Resort Spa is a luxurious, romantic retreat for couples seeking sunshine and serenity. The oceanfront resort pairs world-class dining and palm-lined pools with its Five-Star Eau Spa, included in Vogue’s 100 Best Spas in the World List, offering thoughtfully curated experiences. Couples can book the Eau Spa Experience for Two package, a romantic wellness escape featuring side-by-side 60-minute Signature Massages, Seaside Solution Facials, and full access to the spa’s sauna, steam room, and relaxation gardens. For Valentine’s weekend, their Aphrodite’s Experience for Two adds an extra layer of romance with a full-body massage, a floral soak infused with Bulgarian rose and Madagascar vanilla, and sweets to share. A link to additional Valentine’s spa specials can be found here, offering even more ways to celebrate love and connection at Eau Spa.
With glamorous Hollywood Regency-style guest rooms designed by Palm Beach local Jonathan Adler, multiple dining options (including a recently opened Nobu) as well as a beautiful oceanfront beach and two pools, you’ll be relaxed upon arrival—Eau is the perfect location for serious spa-goers in search of sunshine.
Six Bells Countryside Inn, Rosendale, New York
The Six Bells Countryside Inn, a recently opened Michelin-rated country inn located in the Hudson Valley, is inspired by the spirit of the English and American countryside. A stay at the inn feels like diving into a storybook you can sleep in—owner Audrey Gelman recently turned a historic three-story building with eleven unique guest rooms, a tavern, riverside restaurant, and shop into an immersive world. As a guest at The Six Bells, you’re invited to step into another time; the inn is an expansion of The Six Bells, a country-inspired home goods company that began as a small shop in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, and now, almost everything on property is shoppable through the store.
Located in Rosendale, New York, on the shores of Rondout Creek, the historic building has operated as a hostelry since 1850, when it first opened as the Central Hotel. Its most recent iteration, however, was born out of a love for country design and its patchwork of influences, and we highly recommend a stay for design lovers—each of the 11 rooms is entirely unique, crafted with elements like canopy beds, pine cladding, archival wallpaper, and hand-stenciled artwork.
The Six Bells also features a restaurant and tavern called The Feathers, which offers a menu rooted in early American and traditional country cookery. Guests can expect a blend of simple, hearty dishes inspired by regional history and tradition—Chef Larkin Young’s menu draws from local farms and bakers. (His past roles include Basalt, The Willows Inn at Lummi Island, and Hudson Valley destinations like Westwind and The Maker.)
When not enjoying your cozy, transportive room or the Inn’s restaurant offerings, you can explore the Mohonk Preserve on a winter walk or head there for some ice skating, go antiquing in the area or shop locally on Main Street, or catch an independent film or live show at the local Rosendale Theatre. It’s also worth a trip to nearby Kingston, where you can wander through its historic streets filled with beautiful stone houses and incredible restaurants (try Brunette, a delicious wine bar), take a leisurely stroll through romantic Poet’s Walk Park, or hit the Kingston Farmer’s Market on the way back home. Rhinebeck and its legendary antiquing and shopping are also close by, allowing for an inspired getaway filled with charming shops, cozy taverns, and candlelit dinners.
Baron’s Cove, Sag Harbor, New York
Sag Harbor, a beloved and intimate seaside community, is filled with as many artists and bohemians as it is history and culinary intrigue. The resort town has long been known as a fishing port turned cultural hotbed, but it’s also become a gorgeous destination for an upscale, relaxing weekend away from the city, especially during the off-season. Hop on a train or Jitney and in an hour and a half (no summer traffic!), and you’ll find yourself a world away from the hustle and bustle.
Baron’s Cove, located at the center of it all, is a gorgeous saltbox cottage designed by Colleen Bashaw that underwent a full renovation in 2015. Each of the 67 rooms boasts charming village and serene harbor views, and some even have their own private patios to take a languid coffee in the morning. Situated just a short walk from Main Street, the hotel has been a favorite with the glitterati since the 1950s: Truman Capote, Jackson Pollock, and Kurt Vonnegut were all once guests. With an array of amenities including a harbor-side heated saltwater pool, tennis court, fitness studio, spa services, and complimentary beach service with transportation upon request, it’s no wonder why.
If you’re after elevated yet homey cuisine, you’ve come to the right spot: tuck into a steaming chicken pot pie while overlooking the Harbor from the property’s second-floor dining room, or grab a cocktail and a light bite in the cozy ambiance of the Lobby Lounge, where delft-tile studded fireplaces roar in the depths of winter, beckoning you to order a second glass of Cabernet as you listen to the live band. And if you’re looking to venture off property, there’s no shortage of activity in Sag Harbor, one of the more perennial hamlets of the Hamptons.
Wölffer Kitchen, from the family that brought us the most beautiful (and Instagrammed) vineyard on the East End, is a must-visit for Saturday or Sunday brunch (try the Spiced Apple French Toast). The Beacon, one of the only restaurants directly on the water, is perfect at sunset. And LT Burger, a fun diner-esque experience, has been a favorite with locals for almost a decade. If you’re after a congenial feel where everyone knows each other by name, Dockside Bar Grill is a good bet, with a heavy emphasis on seafood (and water views). For a picnic, head to Cavaniola’s (Ina Garten’s favorite), pick up some sandwiches, and eat them by the marinas, watching the boats go by.
With some of the best interior design shops in the country quietly tucked off Main Street, you’d be remiss not to pop in and see what treasures you can bring back from your trip out east. Monc XIII, an industry favorite located on Madison Street, boasts an unbelievable array of mid-century pieces, as well as a unique and well-edited assortment of home accessories. Bloom, also on Madison, is the epitome of “if you know, you know”; with no website, the store has one of the most comprehensive offerings of Astier de Villatte outside of Paris, as well as a gorgeous center garden and beautiful wares from France and Belgium. Interior and textile designer Katie Leede’s new shop (which overtook the old and beloved Ruby Beets location) is housed in what used to be a silent movie theater—it also boasts a formidable selection of vintage furniture mixed in with contemporary pieces, as does Sage Street Antiques. Harbor Books, one of the most charming independent bookstores, will make you vow to never shop on Amazon again.
Bedford Post Inn, Bedford, NY
A mainstay in the Bedford area for almost 20 years, The Bedford Post Inn has long been an elegantly appointed watering hole for this sleepy equestrian town nestled in the rolling greens of Westchester County. A Relais Châteaux property, the Inn was recently renovated while thoughtfully maintaining its 18th-century architectural history. It was also recently welcomed into the umbrella of Sunday Hospitality in partnership with co-owner Richard Gere (yes, that Richard Gere)—and the transformation shows. A revamped new culinary program from Chef Sam Mason is excellent and brings in locals and city folk alike (both the dinner and lunch/brunch menus are equally strong), while the newly renovated guestrooms feel like a dream country house come to life: think roaring fireplaces, French doors with sun-soaked terraces, as well as bathrooms with marble walk-in showers and luxurious freestanding soaking tubs.
Nestled on 20 acres, there’s ample opportunity to relax on property, with their famous yoga classes at their dedicated space, The Yoga Loft (a local favorite), as well as offering up massage, acupuncture, reiki, forest bathing, sound baths, and guided trail walks on tap (the BPI acupuncturist, Deb Ross, from local spot The Well Center, is a wizard). And for the busy bees, golf at Pound Ridge Golf Club, curated picnics in some of Bedford’s most picturesque spots (of which there are many), a floral arranging workshop with local floral artist Penny Karvounis, fireside ceremonies and astrology readings with BPI’s chief wellness officer Jennifer Llewellyn of Majestic Hudson, and pickleball, there’s no lack of activities to fill your itinerary. And if you’re looking to explore locally, Bedford Candy Bar and its sister fine foods purveyor (and our personal favorite!) G.E. Brown are a must-visit, as well as the charming new bookshop that just opened in town, Bedford Books. For shopping, La Maison Fête is perfect for trinkets, housewares, and more, while ohHo has you covered on all things in the botanical wellness category. And if it’s culture you’re after, The Bedford Playhouse is continually hosting excellent panels, speakers, authors and more, as well as movie screenings.
Twin Farms, Barnard, VT
Twin Farms has been high on the “romantic escapes” list of locals for over 30 years, and with good reason. The intimate, all-inclusive country hideaway set amidst 300 acres of meadow and woodlands is located 15 minutes north of Woodstock in Barnard, Vermont. Slightly further afield than some of the other properties on this list, Twin Farms is worth the trip for its unparalleled spa offerings in the lush Vermont mountains. The adults-only property also offers up an impressive chef-guided culinary program helmed by internationally celebrated Executive Chef Nathan Rich, with a menu-less dining experience guided by the local and seasonal ingredients sourced both on and off property with local and regional vendors.
With 28 cozy cottages tucked away in the property’s secluded woodlands (and a museum-grade art collection to boot), all featuring wood-burning fireplaces, the property beckons you to sit back and relax in your custom cabin—no two rooms are alike. Also recently launched? Eight luxurious treehouse accommodations, designed by Michaelis Boyd and perched high above the ground—up to 20 feet! The 800 square foot suites cocoon guests between the woodlands with large, sunlit windows intentionally built to give a feeling as if you’re floating in the treetops.
Twin Farms’ winter programming is robust and has something for everyone, from Nordic skiing and snowshoeing, fat tire biking, Alpine skiing, ice fishing and ice skating, and sledding for the adventurous (there are private downhill ski slopes and trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, and all equipment is provided). A private ski sherpa is also available all day to transport guests up and down the Farm’s slopes. And for the homebodies, chess, checkers, puzzles, and games provide entertainment by the fire, while their library invites you to sit down and stay awhile. You can also take a tour of that famed art collection, with works by Milton Avery, Jasper Johns, William Bailey, and David Bates—while exploring the nooks and crannies of the 18th-century Main House.
Wellness options abound, as the spa is an equal draw here to the culinary program: the property offers a Japanese-style soaking tub, or furo, at The Bridge House Spa—and you can find privacy and healing in Twin Farms’ Shou Sugi Ban House, secluded in the woods with pristine, 104°F salt water and views of the forest. The spa features treatments using local Vermont product lines including Tata Harper, as well as a fitness center to get some movement in with yoga, guided meditation, pilates, and more.
The Ranch, Hudson Valley, NY
Famous for its original sister property in Malibu, The Ranch has long been known in wellness circles for its no-holds-barred approach: early rising, rigorous hikes, exceptionally clean culinary programming, and daily bodywork and massages are just some of the things you can look forward to during a “Ranch Experience.” But at the recently opened Hudson Valley property, elements of the hardcore Malibu experience have been eased for uptight New Yorkers (you can have caffeine, for one), and the result is a truly gorgeous—and transformative—wellness experience perfect for a couples getaway to help you reset, recharge, and reconnect both mentally and physically.
Less than an hour from NYC, a small group of 25 guests is immersed in either a three-night, four-day or four-night, five-day program featuring The Ranch’s signature schedule of mountain hikes, strength training classes, restorative yoga, deep tissue massage, and organic, plant-based meals. We love that it’s open to all fitness levels, and especially love the accommodations: set on a historic private lakefront estate in the Lower Hudson Valley, The Ranch team alongside AD100 interior designer Steven Gambrel took painstaking efforts to preserve and highlight the property s extraordinary architectural features, while maintaining a warm and inviting atmosphere. The guest rooms feel residential yet impossibly chic, and the light-filled dining room—as well as all of the accommodations—are distraction-free (including no TVs), encouraging guests to unplug and connect with each other.
The 2,000 square foot former ballroom, reimagined as a gym, is fully stocked with the latest high-tech wellness equipment, and the 5,000 square foot solarium features a year-round heated pool, infrared sauna, and hot and cold contrast plunge pools (a wellness lover’s dream). The results-oriented program is offered year-round, and in winter, the trails and trees create a serene and scenic respite for a one-of-a-kind hiking or snowshoeing experience. For winter guests, the cooler weather brings a unique opportunity to reconnect with nature, rejuvenate your body, and invigorate your spirit—whether that looks like “hiking through crowd-free trails and breathing in the crisp, fresh air,” or adding on some “indoor activities” including culinary workshops, pool-based fitness classes, fireside yoga, Pilates, breathwork, and manifestation sessions. With the option to add on a myriad of additional treatments like energy therapy, Reiki, acupuncture, hypnotherapy, and couples massages, you’ll leave The Ranch Hudson Valley refreshed, renewed, and practically levitating.
Delamar Mystic, Mystic, CT
Trade snow-covered slopes for salt air with a New England coastal winter escape on the water at the recently opened Delamar in Mystic, CT, where the season feels quieter, slower, and effortlessly refined. Winter reveals the shoreline at its most peaceful—crisp mornings, dramatic seascapes, and cozy evenings spent beside the fireplace in the hotel’s lobby or at La Plage, the on-property restaurant, savoring a warm, thoughtfully prepared meal paired with a seasonal cocktail or handcrafted mocktail.
Many of the hotel’s guest rooms boast beautiful water views that feel like you’re on the inside of a houseboat, and the interiors have a cozy, library-esque vibe. Then, there’s Mystic itself—a perfect destination for winter travel with its sea views, fireside comfort, and the beauty of being by the water. If it’s too chilly to venture outdoors, however, head to the hotel’s Cure Spa for expert massages and Biologique Recherche facials. And for a little culture, hotel guests get complimentary access to the Mystic Seaport Museum and the Connecticut Art Trail, a partnership of 30 museums and historic sites that promote the state’s rich cultural heritage.
