Since it s beginning, the Met Gala has been an annual site for visionary, no-holds-barred glamour—resulting in countless iconic beauty transformations that have sparked more than just a few headlines.

At 2015’s “China: Through the Looking Glass” exhibition, Dakota Johnson soaked up the spotlight when she chopped her long ponytail to a springy, chin-length bob—and arguably set off the viral trend that seemingly cannot be stopped. That same year, Rihanna made Met Gala history in an imperial yellow, fur-trimmed, gilded headdress—and, not to be forgotten, a transformative set of eyebrows.

For a certain kind of red carpet regular, the Met Gala is the perfect opportunity to walk the line between whimsical and dramatic. Take Cher, who paired a sparkling Bob Mackie look with sculptural earrings and a wash of lavender eyeshadow in 1985, while in 2014 Beyoncé went from Sasha Fierce to avant-garde vamp with the help of a slicked-down style and a smoldering violet lip.

Perhaps the most boundary-pushing gala yet, 2019’s “Camp: Notes on Fashion”, inspired bright palettes—and many outfit changes: Perhaps most memorably, Lady Gaga made her entrance onto the red carpet wearing a set of oversized gold lashes and a head-turning platinum bob. In 2022, the Met Gala returned with the second installation of “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” which saw guests interpreting the “gilded glamour” dress code through makeup, hair accessories, and glowing complexions. The 2023 Met—accompanying the exhibition “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty"—found attendees honoring the late designer s work through staunchly starched collars and plenty of Ancien Régime-esque ponytails.

To celebrate the 2025 exhibition, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” we’ve rounded up the best beauty looks to grace the gala over the years. From impeccably detailed updos to next-level makeup, they’re still iconic—even decades later.
