An exquisite train needn’t feel fussy, either. In 2017, Solange Knowles (who has never been one to shy away from sartorial theatrics, onstage or on the red carpet) sported a Thom Browne coat with an extra-long quilted train. The end result showed off the puffer expertise Browne acquired during his tenure at Moncler, and set a new standard for how cool girls can go long.

In 2019, Lady Gaga did the camp theme justice with a long, pink cape-train by Brandon Maxwell (the train was even fluffed by her entourage of dancers while on the carpet). Cardi B also wore a three-meter train by Thom Browne, which was covered in over 30,000 red feathers—because with the Met Gala, more is always more. In 2021, Billie Eilish channeled Old Hollywood in a peachy Oscar de la Renta gown, complete with a sweeping hemline that required several people to carry it up the stairs. Last year, meanwhile, Blake Lively made headlines when the long train of her Versace gown unraveled down the carpet to showcase a copper-like finish inspired by the Statue of Liberty.

More recently, in 2023, many dressed “in honor of Karl” with elaborate trains. Rihanna wore a Valentino white cape and gown with a lengthy skirt stretching down the Met staircase (there was plenty of room, however, as she and A$AP Rocky were the grand finale to the red carpet). Bad Bunny was on a similar wavelength in a Jacquemus ensemble with 26 feet of rosettes extending behind him. Notably, Jeremy Pope’s Balmain ensemble had a portrait of Karl printed on his lengthy train. Nicole Kidman’s, on the other hand, was more classic: She wore a Chanel dress made for her famous Chanel No. 5 commercial in 2004.

There’s clearly no shortage of inventive or exquisite ways to wear a train at the Met Gala, but we’ve highlighted the 43 most showstopping ones below.
