Oscars 2024: The Very Best Social Media Reactions

Between Ryan Gosling’s showstopping performance and the partying grannies (Chang Li Hua and Yi Yan Fuei—stars of the documentary short Năi Nai Wài Pó—in custom Rodarte suits, no less) to Emma Stone’s shocked and emotional acceptance speech, the 2024 Oscars were almost designed for viral moments—and that’s before you get to the true hero. (We’re talking about Messi, the dog from Anatomy of a Fall, of course.)

There was no small amount of commentary on Justine Triet’s pinstripe suit. Some saw an echo of that other classic work of cinematic greatness, Nicole Kidman’s AMC ad.

Composer Scott George and members of the Osage Nation performed a truly rousing rendition of the Oscar-nominated song “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)” from Killers of the Flower Moon. It was hard to think that anything was going to win over Billie Eilish’s melancholy ballad from the Barbie soundtrack, but “Wahzhazhe” showed that there were other worthy and powerful entries in the category too.

We love a seemingly directionless, rambling plot summary that is simultaneously extremely charming. John Mulaney for host? Would they dare?

It’s always a bit of a surprise when someone who wins is not at the ceremony. (Hayao Miyazaki had a charming excuse, as issued by Studio Ghibli: “Please forgive them. They’re kind of up there in the age bracket.”)

The ceremony went long on actors praising other actors, and we enjoyed (almost) every moment of it.

Okay, there is something about watching the Oscars that brings out the subjective, demanding critic in all of us—we’re not denying it.

Look, we know there’s a lot riding on the way best picture gets announced. (No one needs a reminder of the La La Land–Moonlight flub.) It seems like a category you should nail? That’s what made Al Pacinos’s somewhat anticlimactic “my eyes see” formulation a bit…odd? Oh well! Here’s to next year!
