After years of swaddling and sizing up, this fall, the big and boxy blazer could very well be eclipsed by the nipped, cinched-waist blazer.
Brands like The Frankie Shop and Wardrobe.NYC practically wrote the book on larger-than-life blazers, but take a look at their assortment, and you’ll find fitted silhouettes seeping into the forefront of their collections. The same goes for some of our favorite runway designers too. Proenza Schouler sent models down the runway in sleek blazers that were lassoed by thin belts, which gave them a peplum-like appearance. Similarly, narrowly cut blazers were one of the many highlights in Stella McCartney’s equestrian-inspired fall 2023 collection. The sculpted suiting doesn’t stop there; labels like Gabriela Hearst, Altuzarra, and Saint Laurent are also on board with the nipped movement. The new look, of course, is nothing new—it harkens back to the iconic blazer sculpted by Mr. Christian Dior in 1947. The hourglass silhouette followed the boxy wartime cuts for women (not unlike the popular styles of the previous years); fashion is a pendulum, and it was a matter of time before it swung in the other direction.
